Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 17, 2020) – Kerry Madsen ended only one spot out of advancing into the 9th annual Brownells Capitani Classic presented by Great Southern Bank main event last Saturday at Knoxville Raceway.

The Killer Instinct Crossbows sponsored Big Game Motorsports driver faced an uphill battle from the start of the marquee World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series event that replaced the famed Knoxville Nationals this year.

Madsen qualified sixth quickest to kick off the competition that featured nearly 70 drivers on Thursday before he was involved in a wild crash during his heat race.

“We qualified well and we were trying to go forward in the heat and ended up crashing,” he said. “We totaled the car. Basically a guy made a mistake in front of me. We were pushing hard so it didn’t go well. The guys got a backup car out so we could get some points.”

Madsen placed 16th in the B Main in the second car.

He returned to the half-mile oval on Friday, qualifying 25th quickest and finishing sixth in a heat race before the night ended in the B Main.

“The track was really greasy when we qualified so we didn’t qualify where we usually do,” he said. “Then we got stuck on the inside and got a poor start in the heat race. We didn’t make any ground up and that killed us in points. It put us toward the back of the B Main and we finished back there.”

Madsen nearly overcame the frustrating preliminary nights on Saturday when he charged from ninth to fifth place in a qualifier. That was one spot shy of locking into the A Main.

“We got up to fourth, but I lost the transfer and ended up fifth,” he said. “Then in the B Main I was up to fourth and lost the final transfer with a lap to go. We weren’t our best. Driving a bit better would have helped. It just didn’t click for us.”

Madsen also placed fifth in the B Main to miss a transfer into the feature by only one position.

The team is heading north this weekend to race with the World of Outlaws on Friday at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D., during the Second Leg of the Northern Tour and on Saturday at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, N.D., during the Red River Rumble.

“It’s a couple of tracks that are fun to race at,” Madsen said. “We’ve had podiums at both. Grand Forks is fun when you can get going. Fargo should suit our team, too.”
