Carter Scores First Career Clay Cup Nationals Championship

Inside Line Promotions – EVERSON, Wash. (July 28, 2020) – Dominic Carter captured his first career IBEW NECA Clay Cup Nationals title in only his second time of competing in the marquee micro sprint event.

Carter invaded Deming Speedway July 16-18 when he piloted his Restricted 600cc micro sprint in a pair of preliminary nights prior to the event finale.

“I came into this event super confident because I had just won the race the week prior there that we came home to run as a warm-up,” he said. “I went out and ran great laps in hot laps, qualifying and my heat race, which set me up highest in points that night.”

Carter set quick time in his group and maneuvered from fourth to win a heat race. The feature inversion lined him up on the outside of the eighth row.

“I had to run from deep in the field against a super strong group of cars in front of me,” he said. “I was quickly making my way to the front when I got tangled with a car I was passing for fourth. I got hit by another car that didn’t have the time or space to avoid me, which ended my night early on the hook.”

Carter rebounded from the DNF the following night. He qualified second quickest in his group, advanced from fourth to second in a heat race and capped the night by rallying from 15th to fourth in the A Main.

“We had to spend all morning putting our car back together with the help of several people to get me back out on the track,” he said. “It was a second chance at a good finish to set us up for a good starting position on the final night. Steve Hamblin and my parents talked with me about being a bit more cautious and patient when making my way through traffic to get to the front and worked super hard to get my car set up for a second great night of racing. I settled into a rhythm and made my way toward the front of the field. I got into fourth to finish the event highest in points from both preliminary nights.”

The solid outing gave Carter the pole position for the 30-lap finale.

“I was pretty nervous before my event and had a great talk with Steve Hamblin, Jason and Lane Taylor, Chris and Colby Thornhill, RJ Johnson, Scott and Corbin Reuschenberg, Justyne Hamblin (who had to watch from home in California), Dale Gjerness, Matt Roberts and my parents,” he said. “I was reminded it was just another race and to keep doing what I have been doing. I focused on keeping my cool, staying smooth, not blowing off my tires and hitting my marks every lap. There were so many talented drivers in that race it was nerve-racking knowing they were right behind me.”

It paid off as Carter led the distance for the special trip to Victory Lane.

“I am super proud of how far my team has come in such a short amount of time and can’t wait for what the future holds,” he said. “I wanted to give a special thanks to Steve Hamblin with Hamblin Motorsports for helping me out so much the past two months. We started working together right before the Oklahoma Sooner 600 Week and have clicked super well. I have learned so much in such a short period of time from both him and his daughter, Justyne Hamblin, and look forward to what is coming in the future.

“Also, thank you to Clean Crawls, CS9 Chassis, Factory Kahne and Hamblin Motorsports for all of your help and support.”

Carter plans on returning to action on Aug. 7 at Plaza Park Raceway in Visalia, Calif., and Aug. 8 at Lemoore Raceway in Lemoore, Calif.
