Be careful what you ask for, because someone may be listening is the moral here.
After racing to a 5th place finish in his most recent outing at Stockton’s 99 Speedway last Saturday night in Ted Finkenbinder’s Western Industrial X-Ray/Les Schwab Tire #3f and putting himself within striking distance of USAC Western Classic point leader Tony Hunt, Geoff Ensign was already thinking about his next race. Talking to Driver Dave, who hauls Finkenbinder’s sprint car to and from races, Ensign said in passing, “It’d be great to go to Washington for the ASCS deal up there Friday and Saturday.” Dave picked up his cellphone, connected with Finkenbinder, and the rest they say is history. It seems Mr. Finkenbinder loves to race as much as The Human Highlight Reel.
Sebastopol’s Ensign and the entire Western Industrial X-Ray #3f crew including Ted himself made the audible to head north for the simple reason that there isn’t any USAC racing down here, and basically the car is just sitting there. Certainly, an unused racecar is a terrible thing to waste. Tuesday morning, Ensign will be on his way to Finkenbinder’s shop to ready the car and load the hauler, and they will make the long tow to Gray’s Harbor raceway in Elma, WA for two nights of racing ASCS style this Friday and Saturday, joining the California contingent which includes Visalia’s Steven Tiner and Princeton’s Mason Moore.
