Burke Produces Podium Finish During Road to Indy Formula 2000 Action Before Netting Top 10 in Sprint Car

Inside Line Promotions – EDNA, Texas (July 21, 2020) – It was a busy mix of asphalt and dirt racing for Trey Burke last week.

Burke competed in the Road to Indy Development Program at the New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, N.J., on Thursday. After qualifying for two 30-minute main events, Burke showed speed against the competition.

Burke started third in the opener, but was involved in a racing incident that dropped him to 10th in the rundown. The 15-year-old driver rebounded in the second main event, charging from eighth to third in the final rundown.

“We have speed,” he said. “We just had some unfortunate events, but we will get better. We are pretty pleased.

“A couple of weeks ago at NCM it took the rain for us to compete for first. Now we don’t need rain. We can solidly compete for the win on the dry. We all finished within a tenth of a second of each other and in one more lap it could’ve been anybody’s game.”

After finishing up his asphalt commitments, Burke headed to Texas to compete in the 305ci sprint car class at Texana Raceway. And just like Burke’s Road to Indy efforts, he had plenty of speed.

Burke drove away to his heat race win. In the feature, he advanced from fifth to second before the track narrowed to one lane. Burke tried to make something happen going for the win and spun. He then rallied from the back of the field to finish seventh.

“I’m very pleased because that’s the first time in the sprint car in a month,” he said. “We have been traveling for the asphalt stuff and haven’t had time to do sprint car stuff. We put half a track on second place in the heat race. In the feature, the leader would pull away and we sucked them back up in a lap or two. With five to go the track was locked down on the bottom. I tried to make the middle of the track work to go for the win because we aren’t running for points and I spun out. We were fast. It was just a matter of the starting spot and how the track was.”

Burke will be back on asphalt this weekend for more advanced practice sessions at NOLA Motorsports near New Orleans, La. Races will be held Aug. 1-2.
