Inside Line Promotions – PORT ROYAL, Pa. (July 21, 2020) – A 15th-place run last Saturday was the top moment of the weekend for Greg Wilson, who invaded Central Pennsylvania for a three-race spectacle with the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1.

“Pennsylvania is as tough as it gets,” he said. “Williams Grove, I love going there, but it doesn’t fit anything that I do correctly. It’s probably one of the few places where it’s hard to go there and be good. Port Royal was pretty decent the first night, but it was frustrating the second night. We have really good speed as the night goes on, but we’re just missing in the beginning.”

The weekend began on Friday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, where a high qualifying result put Wilson and his Hercules Tires, Ohio Logistics, DNC Hydraulics and Gear Off Road sponsored team in too big of a hole to climb out of at the half-mile oval.

“Knowing there’d be good cars there and we don’t normally time in good or race good, I thought I’m going to try a bunch of stuff,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll learn something and I’ll get more comfortable. Sometimes it just doesn’t work. That’s kind of what happened. I made a plan and stuck to the plan. We changed everything we wanted to throughout the night, but it didn’t make me anymore comfortable. Whenever we hit the gas we spun the tires.”

The best night was Saturday at Port Royal Speedway, where Wilson qualified 24th quickest overall and fourth in his group to catch the heat race inversion. He then placed third in a heat race before finishing second in the B Main to lock into the 22nd starting position for the A Main.

“After Friday we changed and went back to what we’re doing to have some success passing race cars,” he said. “It worked so that was good. In the feature, in hindsight, we should have just dumped fuel in it and let it go instead of trying to make it better. We tightened up just a little more and dumped fuel in. The combination of the two wasn’t the right thing to do. We still were okay, but I wish we would have left it alone.”

Wilson’s rally from 22nd to 15th was the fourth-most positions gained.

He returned to Port Royal Speedway on Sunday. Unfortunately, qualifying toward the back of the field made it tough to overcome even though Wilson moved forward in both his heat race and the C Main.

“We were in trouble after qualifying,” he said. “With that format you have to go pass a bunch of cars in the heat race or else you’re in the back of the C Main. At that point you want to take care of our equipment and make sure you don’t wreck.”

Wilson’s racing plan is up in the air this weekend, but he has a Hercules Tires dealership visit on Thursday at Bessinger’s Automotive Tire Pros in Pacific, Mo., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
