After coming off a solid top 5 weekend with the UMSS, Scotty Thiel and the Scott Thiel Motorsports #64 Sprint Car backed that up with two top 5 finishes this past weekend at the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway and the Plymouth Dirt Track.
Friday night, June 17th at the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway, Scotty drew a 13 pill which set him to start inside the second row of the heat race event. After taking the green, Thiel discovered something wrong with the car and pulled off a few laps into the race. The crew went to work and discovered a fueling issue. The guys got it all fixed and prepared the car for the 12 lap B-Main event. Scotty started outside the 3rd row of the B-main and after taking the green, he charged forward. When the checkered flag flew, Thiel found himself in the third position and a 19th place starting position for the night's 30 lap A-Main event.
When the A-Main went green, Scotty started to slowly pick car by car each lap. With roughly 15 laps in, Scotty jumped up to the high side and put the pedal down. Thiel was making the top side work, and found himself all the way up to the 6th position when a caution came out with only a few laps to go. After the restart, Scotty jumped back up to the high side and got into the 5th position and maintained that spot when the checkered flag flew. Thiel was the hard charger for the night, passing 14 cars! The crew was really excited and Scotty was really happy with the car.
Saturday June 18th at the Plymouth Dirt Track, Scotty drew a 2 pill which set him on the pole of the first heat race. After taking the green, Thiel never looked back and took his first heat race win of the year. That would also give him a second row inside starting position for the 25 lap A-main event.
The green flag flew and Scotty took the chance to jump up to the high side but realized it was the wrong move to make and dropped back to around the 6th position. Scotty got back down on the bottom side and had to charge back. Restarts were a big help to Thiel as he started on the inside row and was able to pick off a car or two each time. With about ten laps to go, Thiel was sitting in the 4th position and after another restart, he got a great run off the bottom and shot into the 2nd position. Thiel had a clear track ahead to catch the leader and ran him down. Scotty fell short of the win, but still managed to capture that 2nd place position. "We needed a few more laps" Explained Thiel after the race.
