Inside Line Promotions – ORANGEVILLE, Pa. (May 15, 2020) – Joey Amantea is set to compete in both winged and wingless micro sprint competition this Saturday at Greenwood Valley Action Tracks, where it will be his first racing action since February.
Amantea was prepared to run at the track last weekend, but inclement weather put a damper on those plans. With many tracks still unable to race in Central Pennsylvania because of COVID-19, Amantea was left wondering if the track would race this week and he had made alternative plans to test in his 360ci sprint car ride.
However, with Greenwood Valley Action Tracks set to try again, this time with a positive weather outlook and no fans being allowed in attendance, Amantea quickly shifted gears back toward competitive racing.
“We originally were planning to go to Path Valley and do some practicing in the wingless sprint car this weekend, but once we knew we could race at Greenwood we decided to try again,” he said. “Making laps by yourself and learning is cool, but it doesn’t compare to the feeling of competing alongside of a field of drivers looking for the win.”
While Amantea won’t be getting laps behind the wheel of the 360ci sprint car to prepare for his rookie season, he will be joined by his new car owners this weekend as they will be crewing on his micro sprint to gain a familiarity with each other prior to the sprint car season starting.
“It’s kind of a win-win scenario as we get to race and we can get a feel of each other in how I communicate things at the track,” Amantea said. “They’ve never seen me race in person and I think it’ll pay dividends once we get started in the big car having that familiarity together.”
Amantea was able to get a few laps in at Greenwood Valley Action Tracks early last week during a private test session and he is looking forward to seeing where he stacks up against some of the area’s best drivers.
“We made a few changes late last season to get more drive coming out of the turns and I really think we hit on something that will help us tremendously,” he said. “We made 20 laps at Greenwood in a test, just to make sure the equipment was ready and see how we felt, and I think we have a setup capable of contending for wins if I do my job as a driver.
“I don’t want to get ahead of myself, as anything could happen, but I feel like we have a shot to win this weekend. I’ll be extremely disappointed if we’re not in the thick of things coming to the checkered flag.”
