Kerry Madsen Survives Wild Debut at Park Jefferson to Garner Second-Place Finish

Inside Line Promotions – NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. (April 27, 2020) – Kerry Madsen earned his best result of the season last Saturday when he scored a second-place finish during his debut at Park Jefferson International Speedway.

Madsen salvaged the podium outing during the Open Wheel Nationals presented by Real-Geese Silhouette Decoys despite battling a mechanical problem and being involved in a late-race collision.

“We had a crazy night,” he said. “I’m pleased because we only had seven cylinders in the A Main. The first start it was fine and after that we lost a cylinder. To get a good finish and be that much down on power was positive.”

The Killer Instinct Crossbows sponsored Big Game Motorsports team began the night by qualifying second quickest out of the 32 competitors. Madsen started sixth in a heat race, but was caught up in an opening-lap crash.

“On the start someone got on the inside and made a hard right turn,” he said. “He hit me with his right rear, but I didn’t crash. As I went into turn one the left rear tire went flat and the steering was messed up. There was nothing I could do and it looped around.”

Madsen visited the work area and returned to the track before the race restarted. He rallied from the back to claim a sixth-place finish, which earned enough points for him to make the feature redraw.

“It was the Knoxville format so it was really important to get back out there and get points because that could be the difference of starting 12th or being in the redraw,” he said. “Fortunately we caught the feature inversion right.”

Madsen lined up on the pole for the 25-lap main event, which was halted on the original start because of rain. The race resumed several minutes later and Madsen took an early advantage, leading the first handful of laps before dropping to third.

“When the first rain delay happened something happened there,” he said. “Either water got in the electrical or something happened. You knew that guys running good would pass you. I thought let’s stay where we are and see what’s going to happen. It felt like it was purely an electrical issue so I felt comfortable continuing.”

Madsen ran third for the majority of the race until the closing laps. The leader excited the track early and then on a restart the new leader also had a problem.

“Something happened to the No. 14 car and we were running second,” Madsen said. “Then on that final restart the track had slowed down enough that we weren’t getting mauled by the power difference. I was sucked up right behind (Aaron) Reutzel and he went low trying to get to the infield and couldn’t get off. I was going to try to make some pass happen, but he ran out of fuel and I didn’t know. As I hit him I couldn’t veer or else I was going for a ride.”

Madsen ran into Reutzel entering turn three, allowing the third-place driver to pass both drivers and take the win. Madsen was able to avoid crashing after the contact and he held on for the runner-up result.
