Sams LaMountain Racing Soaks Up Learning Lessons During Weekend in California

Inside Line Promotions – PETALUMA, Calif. (March 9, 2020) – The Sams LaMountain Racing notebook was filled up last weekend when driver Danny Sams III made his debut in California.

“We learned a lot,” he said. “To be able to come to California and run on tracks that are completely out of our understanding, learning so much was great. The tracks are so much different than what we’re used to. We’re new to it and we took a swing.”

The action began last Friday at Merced Speedway in Merced, where Sams III moved forward every time he hit the track. He advanced from eighth to seventh in a heat race, from 10th to eighth in a qualifier and from eighth to sixth in a B Main.

“The first night we pulled one of the bad pills,” he said. “We made a qualifier and gained a few spots, but a car flipped in front of us and we got caught up in it. It flipped on top of our wings. We finished, but we were definitely not in contention to move forward because of that damage. We made progress again in the B Main, but not enough to get a transfer into the main event.

“I felt good and we had a fast car. It was extremely hard to pass because it was a one-lane track. We started in the back each time we went out and that hurt us.”

Saturday’s show at Placerville Speedway in Placerville rained out. The weekend wrapped up on Sunday at Petaluma Speedway, where Sams III finished fifth in a heat race to open the night.

“I started second in the heat and ran second for more than half of the race, but at the end the car lost its handling and we dropped back to fifth,” he said. “I was loose. Then in the qualifier I was almost up to fourth and we got too tight and dropped back to where we started in ninth. I was able to get to fourth in the B Main on the start, but made some mistakes while battling hard and dropped back a couple of spots.”

Sams III capped the night with a seventh-place finish in a B Main.

He will return to action March 20-21 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, during the 47th annual Spring Nationals with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour. He remains tied for second in the ASCS National Tour Rookie of the Year standings.
