PETERSEN MEDIA: Eager to climb back aboard the Neuman Racing No. 9x for the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals following a promising Gateway Dirt Nationals, Paul Nienhiser would have his best showing to date as he finished sixth on his preliminary night and made the Saturday night ‘B’ Main at the Chili Bowl Nationals.
“I can’t say enough about how great it was to work with the Neuman’s these last couple of races for the indoor season,” Paul Nienhiser said. “They have top notch equipment, and it showed with all of us being in the hunt during our prelim nights.”
Slated to run on Monday night, Nienhiser would take advantage of the morning practice as he was pleased with the speed his CAM2 Blue Blood Racing Oil machine had.
Tweaking some things on the car handling wise before the night of racing started, Nienhiser would take advantage of an opportunity in his heat race. Lining up third, the lead duo would bang wheels and Nienhiser would be there to pounce as he grabbed the lead and went on to win the race.
Picking up some very important passing points, Nienhiser moved into a qualifier where he would line up in the fifth position. Feeling very sporty in his mount, Nienhiser would work his way to second. Taking a couple shots for the lead, the Chapin, IL driver would think better of it and hang on for the second place finish.
“I felt good in my heat and my qualifier, and I knew we would have a good starting position with a second-place finish,’ Nienhiser said. “In hindsight, if I push the issue for the lead and win, I probably start on the front row of the ‘A’, and who knows how our week would have looked.”
Taking the green flag from sixth on Monday night, Nienhiser would rip the cushion for much of the 30-lap feature as he ran inside the Top-Five. Taking a couple shots at third running Michael Pickens, nothing would stick as he continued on in fourth.
Slipping back to fifth in the race’s closing laps, Nienhiser would apply pressure to Zach Daum who had occupied the fourth spot. Forced to get on the binders, Nienhiser would lose a position and end Monday night with a strong sixth place finish.
Locked into a Saturday night ‘B’, Nienhiser would line up on the outside of the fifth row as he looked to lock into the coveted 55-lap feature event.
On a fast racing surface following a heavy track rework before the ‘night’ show started, it would prove to be one dimensional in the early goings. Abel to work up to eighth in the final stages of his ‘B’, Nienhser would get to Sammy Swindell who was one spot out of the final transfer position.
Looking to make a move on Swindell, Nienhiser raced into turn one thinking he had cleared the veteran, but with Swiindell still there Nienhiser would get his right rear up over Swindell’s left front and he would spin around and tip over; ending his 2020 Chili Bowl.
“We had a good shot on Saturday, I just made a mistake,” Nienhiser said. “Again, big thanks to the Neuman’s. They were a blast to work with, and put four very strong cars on the track each and every night, and that is saying a lot for a really small team from IL.”
Nienhiser would like to thank CAM2 Blue Blood Racing Oil, Mason Sound, Innovative Design, Bradshaw Custom Pumping, Wessler Bros. Agency, Bob Hawks Auto Body, Littleton Storm & Timber, Fierce Herbicide, Sunstoppers Window Tinting, Engler Machine and Tool, FK Indy, Rider Racing Engines, Kaeding Performance, Smith Titanium Products, Vortex Wings, Signature Signs and Design, and Team Simpson for their continued support.
