PETERSEN MEDIA: Getting a last minute invite to compete at the Gateway Dirt Nationals, Paul Nienhiser would use the event as a test session of the upcoming Chili Bowl Midget Nationals as the event marked his first midget start in over a year, and his first with Neuman Racing.

“All in all the Gateway Dirt Nationals was a very valuable test session for Chili Bowl,” Paul Nienhiser said. “I was really happy with the speed we had all weekend long, and the Neuman’s really have great cars and are a ton of fun to work with.”

Hitting the surface in ‘The Dome’ on Thursday night, the Chapin, IL driver would endure a minor engine issue during hot laps, and the Stanton Racing Engines team as well as the Neuman Racing team would do a great job of making repairs in time for time trials.

On the rough surface that is often the norm during the vent, Nienhiser admittedly took some time to get used to it as it was his first experience on a rough surface in a midget. Timing in 14th quickest in time trials, he would line up seventh in his heat race.

Continuing to shake off some rust and acclimate to the new car, Nienhiser would come to life at the halfway point of his heat race. Making a couple of nice moves, he would work his way up to finish fourth, which would line him up eighth in the Thursday night feature event.

When the race came to life, an early flip just in front of him would force Nienhiser to get on the brakes hard and it would kill his engine and he would be ruled involved in the accident and would be forced to the tail end of the field.

Working his way back through the field looking to put himself in a good spot for Saturday night, a late restart would see some guys get crossed up in front of him and he would again find himself in the back of the pack.

Able to work his way forward again, Nienhiser would crack the Top-10 as he finished ninth and found himself in the second row of the second Saturday night ‘B’ Main.

Working on the thing cushion that had built up on Saturday night, Nienhiser’s second place finish transferred him into the Gateway Dirt Nationals feature event where he would take the green flag from the 11th starting position.

Continuing to show very good speed in the Cam 2 Blue Blood Racing Oil backed entry, contact with another car at the halfway point of the race would cause a flat tire on his machine and it would bring his night to an early end.

“I was bummed we couldn’t finish our weekend off, but a lot of good came from the race, and I am super excited to get to Tulsa in a couple of weeks,” Nienhiser added. “The Neuman’s do a really good job, and it allows me to focus on driving, and I think we all did a great job collectively.”

Nienhiser would like to thank CAM2 Blue Blood Racing Oil, Mason Sound, Innovative Design, Bradshaw Custom Pumping, Wessler Bros. Agency, Bob Hawks Auto Body, Littleton Storm & Timber, Fierce Herbicide, Sunstoppers Window Tinting, Engler Machine and Tool, FK Indy, Rider Racing Engines, Kaeding Performance, Smith Titanium Products, Vortex Wings, Signature Signs and Design, Big T’s Video Poker & Slots and Team Simpson for their continued support.
