In 2010, Andy Gregg led all but the last 100 feet during the Golden State Challenge race at Santa Maria. On Saturday night Gregg returned to the racy oval, and captured his first career King of the West feature event as he charged from his sixth starting position.
As the green flag waved on the 30-lap feature event Gregg quickly began working his way toward the front aboard his Bret Ervin Racing/7 Industries/Ott powered Eagle No.53.
In the first three laps, Gregg was able to crack the top three by way of using the top of the track to get around Tim Kaeding, Evan Suggs, and Kenny Allan.
Once in third, Gregg and his College Cyclery/Wheel Vintiques/Autism Awareness backed entry began to track down the lead pack of Jonathan Allard and Brent Kaeding as they had broken away from the field.
On the seventh circuit, Gregg was able to pull along side Br. Kaeding, and challenge him for the second spot. In the third and fourth corners, Gregg was able to utilize a text book slide job to get the second spot from the veteran driver, and set his sites on Allard for the lead.
As the race continued under green at a torrid pace, the Hot Rod Shop/King Racing Products/Ervin Sales Group machine continued to show its muscles as Gregg quickly approached Allard to challenge for the lead on the 10th circuit.
As Gregg pressured the leader, he utilized a monster run down the backstretch to slide under Allard and quickly begin to motor away from the field.
The next 14 laps clicked off under green with Gregg working through lapped traffic, as T.Kaeding had worked his way into the second spot, and tried to battle Gregg.
On the 24th lap, the first caution flag slowed the event bunching the field up and putting T.Kaeding on the outside of the Guts Racing/BR Motorsports machine with six laps remaining.
Gregg continued to lead the way as the race was slowed two more times before the finish, but Gregg remained strong and drove his 7 Industries sprinter to his first win of the 2011 season, and first career KWS win.
βIt feels great to finally get that first KWS win,β said a jubilant Gregg. βI have to thank Brett (Ervin) for sticking with me, and all of our great sponsors for making it possible to come out and do what we love. We have been fast all year and now we have something to show for it.β
To start off the night Gregg stopped the clocks with the fifth fastest lap of the 18 cars assembled at Santa Maria Speedway. In Heat race action, Andy was able to grab the second spot, and after starting seventh in the dash, he was able to grab the sixth spot and give himself a third row starting spot for the feature.
