Covington’s 3rd Place Run Highlights Devil‘s Bowl Weekend

CG Motorsports- GLENPOOL, Ok. (October 23rd, 2019) Matt Covington came home 3rd and 22nd this past weekend with the ASCS Lucas Oil National Series at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.

Friday set Covington on the outside pole position for his heat race. Unable to get the jump on the start, he rode in 2nd until the finish. His points total started him 9th in the night’s A feature. At the beginning of the race, he was able to make a few passes. But after a restart on a midway caution, Covington was able to impressively maneuver into 3rd, where he stayed until the checkers waved.

On Saturday, the pill-draw dealt Covington a mid-row starting position in 5th. Due to heavy track conditions, Matt was only able to gain one spot by the end. This effort set him up 10th in A feature. His run was ended on the 2nd lap after contact was made with another driver, destroying the front end of his machine and sending him pit-side with a DNF and 22nd place finish.

“Friday we had a fast race car,” Covington commented. “I would’ve liked to have started closer to the front to see what we could do. I usually run pretty well at this track. But I’m still happy with going 9th to 3rd. Saturday was fairly disappointing, though. The track was heavy for the heat race but it was finally starting to come in by the feature. But, unfortunately, the race was over before we got started. In turns 3 and 4 I had to get on the high side to get around a car, and then another car made contact with me, taking out the front end. The damage was too bad to repair so we really didn’t get to see how good the car could have been. But we’ll just have to regroup to take on the last race of the year at TMS.”

Up next for Matt and the ASCS Lucas Oil National Tour is the last National race of the year and a two-night stop at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, TX for action on Oct. 31st and Nov. 1st.
