On a cool Saturday afternoon, another outstanding field of fire-breathing Non-Wing Sprint Cars took to the small D-shaped oval of El Paso County Raceway to battle it out for all the money and to crown a inaugural champion.
Entering Saturday, Zac Taylor of Green River, WY held a comfortable lead over Coby Pearce of Golden, CO, but Pearce held onto a chance to win if Taylor had a bad day.
Taylor's day started out just that way after he drew the worst pill in the bucket placing him last in the 2nd heat. But he quickly rebounded to take second to earn himself the high point honors for the heat races that were won by Brett Ream of Colorado Springs, CO and Todd Plemons of Arvada, CO.
Taylor unfortunately rolled a 6 for the invert of the 25 lap feature event placing Ryan Oerter of Elicott, CO on the pole and Brian Hardman of Golden, CO on the outside pole.
After driver introductions were made, the Total Lending Concepts Front Row Challenge was offered to drivers, and fourth place starter Jesse Fernandez of Parker, CO took the challenge dropping him to the rear allowing Taylor to move up one row.
On the initial green flag, Ryan Riggs of Colorado Springs, CO slid off turn 3 to bring out a yellow and return the field to a complete restart. That's when Oerter, a two-time feature winner in the RMMRA Midget series took to the bottom of the track and never looked back.
Ream, Taylor and Plemons all took charges at the veteran but none could out run the "Catfish".
In the end Oerter cruised to the win with Plemons sneaking a last turn pass over Taylor to grab 2nd.
Zac Taylor wins the war over Coby Pearce earning him the Championship honors for the first year series. The series enjoyed 5 different winners over the ten race schedule with 22 different drivers taking a chance on victory. Winners ran a multitude of engine combinations in the series including a ASCS 360, 355, 383 and RaceSaver 305's.
Series Directors Mike Hathaway and Brad Shubert were very pleased with the series turn-around in attendance; "We made some vital changes to series management mid season and the racers really responded. We brought in a lot of new sponsors, they enjoyed the exposure that the series offered and the racers really enjoyed the perks of running the series. We cannot wait for 2020, we are already working on it with a fever."
