CG Motorsports-Glenpool, OK (Oct. 16th, 2019) Matt Covington came home 3rd at Creek County Speedway during the John Christner Fall Fling after his 2nd place run and charge was halted by a power steering issue during feature.
The 2-day event was shortened to Saturday night only for the Lucas Oil National tour after damp, cold weather invaded the speedway grounds on Friday.
Saturday, Covington took advantage of a pole position pill draw and won his heat race, earning a spot in the night’s re-draw. He pulled the 6th pill for the feature.
By the first caution early in the feature, Covington had already worked his way forward from 6th to 2nd. Pressuring as the race resumed, Matt was able to pull up on the leader in traffic before the power steering blew. For the remainder of the race, he had to wrestle the steering wheel for control of his machine to survive the race. His hold on the runner-up spot slipped in the last few laps, taken by Roger Crocket, placing him 3rd as he crossed the finished line.
“We had another strong run at Creek,” stated Matt. “I knew we had our work cut out for us with Sam on the pole and us starting 6th. I was able to work into 2nd pretty early and from there, we started gaining on Sam and closing the gap as we raced through traffic. But then my power steering gave out. Luckily there was a late caution that gave my arms a break and saved our good finish. We’re pretty sure it was a seal that got worn out during the last few races from some of the previous accidents. But I rarely have any issues with my steering and the KSE guys are good at taking care of us and will get it rebuilt. I was disappointed when it faded and started puking fluid on me though, I’d have liked to kept racing Sam there and see what we had. But Devil’s Bowl is up this weekend and that’s one of my favorite tracks. Hopefully we can make it up by having a good run there.”
Up next for Matt and the ASCS Lucas Oil National Tour is a two-night stop at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, TX for action on Oct. 18th and 19th.
