Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2019) – Kerry Madsen nearly captured a top-10 finish during the Champion Racing Oil National Open.
The Big Game Motorsports driver improved throughout the two-day World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series event at Williams Grove Speedway, where the KI Crossbows backed team qualified 11th quickest in group action on Friday. A fourth-place run in a heat race was followed by a third-place finish in the Last Chance Showdown. Madsen pulled in early during the main event because of a lack of brakes.
“We were good in the B Main and went forward so we were excited to move forward in the A Main,” he said. “I felt good on the opening lap. Coming into turn three a brake line got sheared. We came to the work area, but couldn’t get it fixed. There’s a couple of tracks I’m comfortable with keeping going, but Williams Grove, with the shape of the track and what it takes, there’s no way you can do one corner without any brakes.”
Saturday was strong from the start as Madsen qualified fourth quickest in his group. A runner-up result in a heat race earned a spot into a dash. However, Madsen drew the highest number available to line up last. He gained one position to finish fifth, giving him the ninth starting spot for the A Main.
“We qualified well and transferred though the heat to the dash,” he said. “It was looking good. We drew a six for our dash and that’s definitely not optimal. We finished fifth in the dash, which wasn’t bad because that lined us up ninth for the feature. I lost two spots on the opening lap. I felt like we had a great race car, but couldn’t make up any ground. We battled trying to go forward. Then the last 15 laps the track took rubber.”
Madsen ended with an 11th-place result.
He will resume World of Outlaws competition this Saturday at Terre Haute Action Track in Terre Haute, Ind., during the Wabash Clash and Sunday at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.
“I’m looking forward to both,” he said. “Terre Haute should suit our program because we’ve been good on those types of big tracks. Elbows up like it is in Haubstadt is always fun, too.”
