Bryan Hulbert – SAPULPA, Okla. (October 7, 2019) Pocketing $10,041 this past Saturday night in his second consecutive victory in the COMP Cams Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tire, Blake Hahn joined an elite list of drivers who have won back to back at the I-30 Speedway crown jewel.
“Winning the first one felt good, but to win back to back like this, it’s just incredible. The track really played out a lot like it did last year, and once I started driving it that way, I got into a rhythm and just focused on not missing my mark,” stated Hahn.
“I can’t thank Dalton and my Dan enough for everything they did. The car was perfect every time I hit the track. Being on the list of repeat winners like Tony Bruce, Jr, Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell...that’s pretty good company.”
Struggling Friday night, Hahn’s night ended in hear spectacular fashion off the top of turn two after contact with Kyle Clark when a slide job came up short.
“The track Friday was tough, and we just got ourselves behind the eight-ball. Trying to race out a B-Main, I got racing with Kyle and threw a few slide jobs on him that were over the mark and let him drive by. I was trying to break his momentum and force him on the brakes and that didn’t happen, but it is what it is. I thought for a second I was going over, but thankfully was able to keep it upright.”
Drawing the highest pill for Heat Race lineups on Saturday, the format played perfectly for Hahn who was able to move from last to third in the night’s final Heat Race. Putting him second in Passing Points going into the Qualifiers, Hahn moved up two spots to secure his position in the Dash for the top two rows. Missing the win in the Dash by mere feet at the line to Seth Bergman, Hahn started the 41 lap affair from the right of the front row.
Chasing the first twenty laps as John Caney II shot to the lead from the second row, Hahn gave chase on the bottom of the Speedway with Seth Bergman looking for second on the high line. Showing a nose to Hahn, the No. 52 adjusted to the top of turns one and two, while staying to the bottom of turns three and four.
“Once I moved my line, the car woke up and I started running down Carney. We had a caution with 18 down, and once I got rolling on the restart, I got a big run off of turn two and saw my shot at the lead and beat John to the bottom of turn three. After that, I just kept hitting that same line and it worked out. Thank you to Tracey, Joe, everyone at I-30 for getting the track where it needed to be for the racers and the fans. It’s hard work and sometimes you miss it. We saw that Friday, but they were spot on Saturday.”
Racing close to home this weekend, the chase for the season-ending $50,000 top prize heads for Creek County Speedway with the John Christner Trucking Fall Fling presented by James Hodge Ford on Friday, October 11 and Saturday, October 12.
“We’re looking at this weekend like any other race. The goal is to win, but the last thing I want to do is point’s race. Creek has been a mix of results for me the past couple of years, especially with the National Tour. We ended up with a pretty good run last year, and I’ve felt good there every time I’ve raced this year, so we’re excited. Besides it's nice getting to race at a track that's less than a half-mile from my house.”
