Scott Thiel Motorsports and Scotty Thiel kicked off the 2011 race season finally Friday night at the Manitowoc County Speedway in Manitowoc, WI. The crew unloaded the brand new #64 Complete Water Triple X Chassis and prepared for the nights' event. Scott drew a 45 pill, which set him to start 8th in his heat race. With a fairly tacky track, passing was very difficult along with visibility. Thiel managed a sixth place finish, but would have to come through the B-Main in order to make into the 30 Lap A-Main. Scotty started on the pole position of the B, and never looked back, winning by a large margin. With that finish, it would allow Scotty to start 17th in the A-Main event. After a few attempts, the race eventually got under way. Scotty began to pick of several cars and drove a steady race. After 30 laps were complete, Thiel managed to take a solid 10th place finish. " The car worked pretty good, can't complain about 10th for the first night out" Thiel stated.
Saturday, May 7th, was the season opener for the Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds. The STM crew prepared the car all day and hoped for a good night of racing. Scotty drew a 36 pill which set him to start 5th in the heat race. After taking the green flag, Scotty quickly moved up and within a lap found himself sitting in the second position. Thiel managed to maintain that position for the remaining 9 laps and secured a 10th place starting spot for the 25 lap A-Main event. With the track becoming very dry slick, the crew worked very hard to make appropriate changes to the car. When the green flag flew, Thiel went to the highside and made several passes. An early caution would set him back a few positions but when green flag action returned, Thiel made those passes again. Scotty was changing lines throughout the race as the track was getting really slick. He managed to pull of a solid 6th place finishing position and recorded another top 10 result.
Overall, Scott Thiel Motorsports and Scotty Thiel were very happy about the weekend. Having brought out a brand new chassis was a bit concerning to the team, but it payed off as the results were solid. Having two top 10 finishes for the opening weekend is nothing to complain about. The crew will work hard all week and prepare for another weekend of racing, again at the Manitowoc County Speedway and the Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds.
