Lonnie Wheatley, WINCHESTER, Ind. (September 26, 2019) – A trek to Missouri netted a pair of podium finishes for Brady Bacon in Lucas Oil Speedway’s Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial.
With a preliminary WAR Sprint Car win running the overall season total to nine triumphs, Brady Bacon looks for more with a full slate of action this weekend.
This weekend’s action begins with the USAC National Sprint Car series at Indiana’s Gas City I-69 Speedway on Thursday night.
“The Macho Man” will then take in Friday’s World of Outlaws Sprint Car card at Rossburg, Ohio’s Eldora Speedway before competing in the USAC Sprint Car, USAC Silver Crown and All Star Circuit of Champions winged Sprint Car portions of Saturday’s “Four Crown Nationals” at Eldora Speedway.
The two-time USAC National Sprint Car champion enters the weekend sitting third in series points and can secure the car owner’s USAC Silver Crown title for the Klatt Enterprises No. 6 entry with a strong outing on Saturday.
Bacon enters the weekend after finishing out the Hockett/McMillin Memorial with finishes of second in the non-wing WAR Sprint Car portion of the event and third in the winged 360-ci Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour portion
The three-day event got off to a rough start with Bacon eliminated from Thursday night’s ASCS heat race action.
“We were fast, we just got ran over and taken out,” Bacon said of the heat race incident. “Then in the qualifier, we went from ninth and about to take third and the power steering pump stripped out.”
Gridding deep in “B” Main action, Bacon salvaged the night by rallying to a fourth-place finish. “We at least got a few points for the night,” Bacon commented.
Bacon rebounded on Friday to win the WAR non-wing feature event and posted a fourth-place finish in ASCS action to earn a front row starting position in Saturday’s qualifiers.
“I thought we had a chance to win the ASCS feature too,” Bacon says. “Then there was a late red and the car wasn’t quite as good after that.”
Set for the Hockett/McMillin Memorial finale on Saturday, Bacon was in contention for the WAR Non-Wing Sprint Car feature win before settling for runner-up honors aboard the Longworth No. 410 Sprint Car.
“We were right there with (Chris) Windom, then the engine started getting too hot so we just had to ride it out,” Bacon says.
In the winged ASCS portion, Bacon finished second in his qualifying race to secure the 16th starting position for the feature event and rallied through the field to capture a third-place finish.
“It was really heavy because of all the rain,” Bacon comments. “We had a good car and picked them off one-by-one. We got up to sixth and then with a couple of late yellows we were able to get up to third.”
With a weekend of no points implications in the books, it’s back to points action this weekend with a pair of USAC Sprint Car events and the USAC Silver Crown owners’ championship pursuit along with two nights of winged Sprint Car action.
