Inside Line Promotions – COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (Aug. 26, 2019) – Tyler Thompson achieved a new feat last Saturday as he wrapped up his first career track title at Cottage Grove Speedway by earning his first career 360ci winged sprint car win.

“That was a huge night for us,” he said. “We fought for the Cottage Grove limited sprint track championship the last two years and finished second both times. To get a title at my home track is pretty cool.”

Thompson was efficient every time he hit the quarter-mile oval. He qualified second quickest before maneuvering from sixth to second place in a heat race, which ranked him as the high-points driver.

“We had a good first lap in qualifying,” he said. “I tried to go for a little better lap on the second lap, but I ended up blowing it off the top in turn one. Luckily our first lap was a good one. It was combined qualifying and heat race points. The track took rubber in the heat race, but we were able to get to second on a pretty fast track.

“Right before our main they turned the track around from rubber down to a fast, but dry slick race track. Kudos to Brian Crockett and the Cottage Grove staff for getting the track turned around and giving us a good track to race on.”

Thompson redrew the No. 5 for the A Main, giving him the fifth starting position.

“The bottom worked pretty good for a couple of laps,” he said. “I think we were running fifth at that time. The top started to come in so I moved up there and got to fourth. I worked my way into third and it was extensive traffic. A caution came out and I settled into third. On the last long green-flag stretch we got to traffic. The other guys went to the bottom and we were able to take advantage. I got to second and a couple laps later took the lead. I worked through traffic and threw some pretty good sliders.”

Thompson took the lead approximately three quarters of the way through the race en route to his seventh total victory of the season. He finished the season with eight top 10s in nine 360 sprint car features to win the title by 80 points.

Thompson is scheduled to return to Cottage Grove Speedway this Friday and Saturday for an ISCS Series doubleheader. He ranks second in the ISCS championship standings entering the weekend.
