Inside Line Promotions – BILLINGS, Mont. (July 23, 2019) – Cody Masse overcame numerous challenges to make the main event during both nights of the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader last weekend at Big Sky Speedway.

“We accomplished our primary goal, which was to make the A Main each night,” said Masse, who had poor heat race draws on both nights and had to race his way into the A Main through the B Main. “We had some tough luck with the draws, but that’s not to say we didn’t have our opportunities that we should’ve taken advantage of.”

Masse began the weekend on Friday by starting and finishing seventh in his heat race, placing him 10th on the starting grid for the B Main.

“I moved up a spot in my heat race, but ended up giving it back,” he said. “That was important because we had to start back quite a ways further in the B Main due to that one position. But I was able to get a really good start in the B Main and move up to fifth early in the race. I eventually dropped back to sixth, but was able to hold onto the final transfer spot.”

Masse started at the rear of the A Main field and his race was short-lived.

“The polesitter spun going into the first turn just after the green,” he said. “A couple of other cars got into him. I had nowhere to go and hit one of them. Our car suffered significant damage, including a bent frame, and our race was over as well as probably our weekend since we had no way to repair it.

“Fortunately, the crews of both the cars for the Hill’s Racing Team offered their help. They had a tool to straighten the frame and they also welded it where it cracked. And Trever Kirkland loaned us a torsion bar. We greatly appreciated everyone’s help to allow us to race on Saturday.”

Masse started and finished sixth in his heat race on Saturday. He was slotted in the sixth starting position in the B Main when he caught a break.

“The car that was scheduled to start fourth scratched so we moved up and took his spot,” he said. “We lost a spot during the race, but held on to fifth to make the transfer again.

“We ran pretty well early in the A Main and moved up a couple of spots. But then we started getting lapped. In an ASCS National Tour race, your priority after getting lapped is not to be in their way. Improving your position becomes secondary so we pretty much just maintained our position and finished 18th.

“We were satisfied with the weekend since we met our primary goals. But we weren’t as good in Billings as we were earlier in the year and that was a little frustrating.”

Masse is idle from racing this weekend before returning to action with the ASCS Frontier Region on Aug. 2 at Gallatin Speedway in Belgrade, Mont., and Aug. 3 at Big Sky Speedway.
