PLACERVILLE, CA (4-9-11) – A double header of racing opened the season at Placerville Speedway this past weekend and night number two brought it's share of action to the quarter-mile clay oval at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds. It was bannered as Totally Wingless with The Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Car Series, the Midgets and Midget Lites of the Bay Cities Racing Association and the Nor Cal Dwarf Car Association in their Race for Crohn's Disease event.
In the Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Cars, Elverta's Jimmy Sills returned to the track he once called home to score a win. Sills originally started on the pole position of the feature event that ran a total of 15 laps due to a lengthy red flag. On the initial green Sills was charged with jumping the start and penalized two rows for the infraction.
Cody Myers of Browns Valley charged into the lead at the waving of the green flag with Scott Hall of Lincoln challenging him for the top spot and Sills muscling back towards the front in an effort to redeem his forfeited top position. Just as the race began to take shape it underwent a lengthy red flag with three laps down due to a serious accident.
Troy Caraway of Martinez was traveling down the backstretch of the speedway when his front tire climbed the rear tire of another competitor. The collision sheared the entire front clip and one of the down bars off of Caraway's car as it launched into the air in a serious of tumbled before coming to a stop. Caraway was unconscious for a few seconds after the collision. After being extricated from the car by El Dorado County Fire and on site paramedics he was transported to Marshall Hospital and it was reported later that he apparently suffered no serious injuries from the frightening crash that left his car in pieces.
Once the race resumed, Myers continued to lead Hall and Sills. On lap 19, Sills put his Charlie Marrs owned #7 to the high side of the track and pulled aside Hall for second place as they exited the second turn. He continued his charge and overtook Myers for the lead by driving the high side of turns three and four and edging him for the win at the line. Myers finished in second followed by Hall, Mason Myers and Rowdy McClenon.
In the Midget division, Jonathan Henry of Stockton was the fast qualifier of the night. The 30-lap feature event saw Scott Peirovich of Alamo drove to victory. Pierovich was followed across the line by Pete Davis of Pleasanton, David Prickett of Fresno, Henry and Bakersfield's Shannon McQueen. Jason Sneep of Newark won the Midget Lite division over Dakota Albright, Brian Corso and Joey Hoover.
Saturday's race for the Nor Cal Dwarf Cars marked the club's annual "Race for Crohns Disease" event. In this race, Kevin Bender of Rocklin started on the outside of the second row and charged his way to the front of the field that was led to the green by Brian Quilty of Fair Oaks.
Once in the lead, Bender stretched his advantage to a couple of car lengths over sixth place starter Shawn Salisbury. Ryan Winter of Galt finished third over Jeremy Blackshere of Marysville and Josh Hiatt Escalon.
Racing returns to Placerville Speedway next Saturday with 360 Sprint Cars, Limited Late Models and Pure Stocks. The gates will open at 5 p.m. Qualifying begins at 6:30 p.m. Further information can be found at www.placervillespeedway.com
