Podium for Covington at Grizzly Nationals

CG Motorsports-Glenpool, OK (July 17th, 2019) Matt Covington came home 3rd from 6th at the Grizzly Nationals on Friday night after his 2nd place run was halted by a blown tire on the final corner of Gallatin Speedway.

The 2-day event was shortened to Friday night only for the Lucas Oil National tour, after strong rains pelleted the speedway just before the start of hot laps on Saturday.

Friday, Covington took advantage of a pole position pill draw and won the heat race uncontested, earning a spot in the night’s re-draw. He pulled the 6th pill for the feature.

With only one stoppage and red flag in the beginning of the feature, Covington worked his way forward early, making it to 3rd as the rubber started to lay. Pressuring as the field caught traffic, Matt was able to move into 2nd and attempt to run down the leader. Unfortunately, by then, Sam Herfertepe Jr. already had a sizeable lead. Unable to catch him, Covington held the runner-up spot until the last corner of the final lap when the right rear tire came apart as he was exiting turn four. Matt limped across the finish line and only lost one spot, coming in 3rd.

“It was another strong run at the Grizzly Nationals for us,” stated Matt. “I knew we had our work cut out for us with Sam on the pole and us starting 6th. I was able to work into 3rd pretty early, but had to use up the tires some to get the pass for 2nd. Once I got in 2nd, Sam was too far ahead so I was just riding, trying to save the tires till the end. We should have put a new tire on for the feature. But luckily it blew right there at the last corner or we could have lost a lot more spots. I was disappointed that we got rained out Saturday because I thought we had a shot for some passing points and a good feature position. But hopefully we can keep up the speed and momentum going into this weekend.”

Up next for Matt and the ASCS Lucas Oil National Tour is a two-night stop at Big Sky Speedway in Shepherd, MT for action on July 19th and 20th.
