Lafayette, LA - With the whole Gulf Coast bracing for heavy rains and flooding from Tropical Storm Barry tonight, Hurricane Horstman (Cloverdale, OH) makes landfall and takes the checkered flag at Tri-City Motor Speedway for his 3rd GLSS victory of the season.
With 22 cars signed in and registered on a beautiful mid-summer evening, track owner Steve Puvalowski gave our cars a wide tacky track to race on. As the cars finished up qualifying, Phil "the Ohio Gas Man" Gressman (Helena, OH) set fast time once again with a 11.73 second lap or 115 mph. Finishing just 3 thousandths of a second slower, Dustin "Double D" Daggett (Portland, MI) was a close 2nd. Brad Lamberson (Parma, MI), Danny Sams III (Northport, FL) and Kyle Poortenga (Woodland, MI) rounded out the top 5 cars.
Rolling out for the Kistler Engines & Racing Parts Heat 1, Jared Lamberson (Parma, MI) and Josh Shantz (Waterloo, Ont) lead the field to the start line. Lamberson with a great start, leads the field for the first 4 laps. Recovering from falling to 5th on the start, Gressman takes the lead in the 5th lap and takes the checkered flag with Lamberson, Justin Adams (Gibsonburg, OH), Sams and Chris Pobanz (Sebewang, MI) rounding out the top 5.
The Campbell Performance Heat 2 was led out by Andrew Scheid (Sparta, MI) and Dan McCarron (Britton, MI). With a good run around Scheid, McCarron was out front and leading the first two laps. In the 3rd lap, Daggett gets around McCarron for the lead and takes the checkered flag. McCarron, Poortenga, Andy Chehowski (Coldwater, MI) and Chase Ridenour (Perry, MI) rounded out the top 5.
Conner Morrell (Bradenton, FL) and Horstman lead out the final group in the Perfit/Engine Pro Heat 3. At the drop of the flag, Horstman was gone and led the whole race. Morrell fell to 3rd in the first lap, but got back to 2nd for a few laps when Gregg Dalman (Bellevue, MI) reeled him in the 6th lap. Dalman finished 2nd with Morrell, Garrett Saunders (Lakeville, IN) and Brad Lamberson rounding out the top 5.
Starting all 22 cars, Jared Horstman and Jared Lamberson led the field out for our traditional 4 wide fan salute. As the cars reformed in double formation for the green flag, Gressman gets a great start and gets by Horstman and Lamberson for the lead until Horstman reeled him in as they go into lap 3. But Gressman gets by Horstman in lap 4 and holds the lead through lap 11. In lap 12, Horstman gets around Gressman for good and goes 13 more straight laps for the feature win.
Gressman stayed on the leaders tail for a 2nd place finish with Daggett, Dalman and McCarron rounding out the top 5 finishers.
Winning the Engler Machine and Tool Hard Charger award tonight was Andrew Scheid, moving up 7 spots from 20th to 13th. Garrett Saunders had a good run from 12th to 7th and Brad Lamberson and Josh Shantz both moved up 4 spots. A visiting Justin Adams had a solid run with his best finish with GLSS with a 9th place finish.
We are off tomorrow night, but will be back for an early Sunday race at I-96 Speedway July 14th starting at 6 pm.
