Inside Line Promotions – GARDEN CITY, Kan. (July 8, 2019) – Zac Taylor recorded a pair of top-10 finishes with the POWRi Lucas Oil Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association and it happened in just one day.
The 4th annual Midget Round Up at Airport Raceway was rained out Friday, compressing the two-day show into a one-day affair on Saturday with two complete programs.
During the first show, Taylor started and finished fifth in his heat race, which relegated him into the B Main.
“We got to second, which put us in the show, but we had to start 18th,” he said. “Todd (Henry) had the car so good. I was able to move around and ended up ninth. We cleaned the nozzles and got the car ready for the second show, but it wouldn’t fire for hot laps. Todd put a new ignition in and it finally fired. We think because it was so hot it just kind of vapor locked. We didn’t really have time to do a lot of adjustments on the car and we finished sixth in the heat.”
A fourth-place finish in the B Main put Taylor on the tail for the feature.
“I ran second for most of the B Main, but a couple of guys that tangled early were able to come back and found the high line and got around me late,” he said.
Taylor was able to avoid a couple of crashes early in the A Main.
“That helped move us up a little, but I just started picking off cars,” he said. “As the night came in the cooler air brought the moisture back in the track and we got a little too tight toward the end and ended up fourth. I was waiting for the third-place car to make a mistake, but the few he made I was too far behind to capitalize. I probably should have moved up on the track, but I didn’t know how far back fifth was and I didn’t want to lose a spot.
“It still was a pretty good day. We passed a lot of cars and it was a good point night. Todd continues to give me a great race car.”
Taylor, who capped the night with the charge from 20th to fourth, sits second in the RMMRA championship standings.
He will compete this Friday and Saturday during the Grizzly Nationals at Gallatin Speedway in Belgrade, Mont., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour in his family owned 360ci sprint car.
“I’m excited to see how we can do against the ASCS national teams,” he said. “My dad has had our car really hooked up.”
