TORA TORA is a blues-based hard rock band formed in Memphis, Tenn., in the late 1980s. Band members include Keith Douglas, Patrick Francis, John Patterson and Anthony Corder. TORA has two major releases Surprise Attack/Wild America through A&M Records that promoted five singles and videos (Walkin’ Shoes, Guilty, Phantom Rider, Amnesia and Faith Healer). “It’s an exciting relationship,” Sides said. “They are from Memphis and we’re from Memphis. A lot of good bands and a lot of good racers come from Memphis. I used to race dirt bikes with guys that were on their setup crew years ago. I’ve been to several concerts and listened to their music for 20-plus years. We’re excited to have them as part of the team.”
Sides also debuted a new race car last weekend during the Brownells Big Guns Bash at Knoxville Raceway, which hosted a World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series doubleheader.
“We put that new car together and with the new car jitters the first night we didn’t get qualified real well,” he said. “We made a few changes and made the car a lot better throughout that night. The second night we qualified a lot better and therefore your night goes a lot better.”
Sides rallied on Friday after timing in 19th quickset in his group. He maneuvered from 10th to seventh in a heat race after making a big change on the car.
“When I’d get to the corners it’d automatically want to turn down on its own like it had too much stagger,” he said. “I know the stagger wasn’t wrong so I lengthened the left side of the car. We put in a longer radius rod to move the left front forward. Therefore it didn’t turn down as quick. It made it a lot better and we were more comfortable for where we were normally at. Just a little bit of a movement can be the difference from it wanting to dart to the infield versus running around there smooth.”
Sides capped the night with a 14th-place outing in the Last Chance Showdown.
Saturday’s event started much better as Sides qualified ninth quickest in his group. He gained a position to finish fourth in a heat race, which locked him into the A Main. Sides recorded an 18th-place finish in the feature.
Next up for the team will be World of Outlaws shows on Saturday at Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam., Wis., for the Jim “JB” Boyd Memorial presented by Karavan Trailers and on Sunday at Dubuque Speedway in Dubuque, Iowa.
