Inside Line Promotions – SAUK RAPIDS, Minn. (June 10, 2019) – Kerry Madsen enjoyed his most productive week of the season last week when the Big Game Motorsports driver tackled a trio of World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series races.
The KI Crossbows backed team started the week on Tuesday at Fairbury Speedway in Fairbury, Ill., where Madsen qualified 14th quickest before he maneuvered from fourth to second place in a heat race. That locked him into the dash and a fourth-place run lined him up on the outside of the second row for the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown A Main.
“We weren’t quite quick enough to battle for the win, but we were pretty good,” he said. “We’re getting better in our comfort zone. Once you get there you can go back to focusing on small things to fine tune and try to take advantage of every opportunity. It builds some confidence.”
Madsen’s third-place result was his second top five of the season with the series.
Action continued on Friday at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D., during the Northern Tour. Madsen timed in seventh quickest in qualifying and a third-place result in a heat race started him seventh in the main event.
“I had a really good race car,” he said. “We were battling for a top five all night. The track took rubber at the end and there wasn’t much we could do. I think we had a better car, but due to the conditions we finished where we did. It was so tricky up top you had to play the patient game early and wait for the bottom to slow down. Then it laid rubber so you got stuck where you were. Restarts dictated a lot.”
Madsen placed eighth, giving him a top 10 during all five starts at the oval with Big Game Motorsports.
The weekend wrapped up on Saturday at Granite City Speedway. Madsen qualified third quickest and won a heat race to make the dash. A fifth-place finish gave him the fifth starting position for the main event.
“I was disappointed not to at least come away with a top five in the feature,” he said. “We were running fifth on a restart with three laps to go when I made a bad restart and lost a spot instead of gaining one. That’s racing. The groove was predominantly at the top of the track so it was kind of hard to make big moves. Right at the end it got where you could race, but then yellows came out. It was still a good night though.”
Madsen’s sixth-place outing was his fifth top 10 of the season with the World of Outlaws.
The team will also compete with the series this Friday and Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, during the Brownells Big Guns Bash.
“We feel good about it,” he said. “It’s getting to that time of the year where it really matters. We have some confidence. Knoxville is a different animal, but we should be good there.”
