Inside Line Promotions – COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (June 4, 2019) – Tyler Thompson earned his first feature triumph of the season at his home track last Saturday.
Thompson led the distance to garner his 15th career Limited Sprints victory and the 12th at Cottage Grove Speedway.
“It was like a monkey was on our back,” he said. “We had a couple of opportunities to win at Cottage Grove this year, but it hadn’t worked out. It was a waiting game. It was nice to get it over with and hopefully now we can get some more.”
Thompson was quickest in his group’s qualifying session and he ranked third overall. He then advanced from fourth to second place in a heat race.
“We qualified really good, which sets us up deep in the heat,” he said. “We had to pass a couple of cars. The motor wasn’t running right. It took us a lot of time to get it to run right between the heat and the main. The fuel system was off, but we got it right for the A Main.”
The feature inversion also fell Thompson’s way as he lined up on the pole for the main event.
“The bottom was good, but I knew it was going to go away,” he said. “I gave myself five laps and then assessed how it was. It was starting to go away so we moved to the top. After a restart the second-place car would get to our inside, but we’d get a good run off turn two and pull away. Every time we’d get to traffic there’d be a caution. On that night it was probably a good thing because there’d be a lot of cars if we were stuck in traffic.”
The win was Thompson’s second overall this season and gives him victories in both Oregon and Washington.
Thompson will return to Cottage Grove Speedway this Saturday to compete in the 360ci winged sprint car division. He enters the event ranked second in the championship standings – only 17 points out of the lead.
