Knoxville Raceway Knoxville, Iowa (June 1, 2019)— McKay Group/West Bend Insurance night at Knoxville Raceway was kicked off with the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame Banquet earlier in the day. The late Jason Johnson was the highlight of the induction. Jason made several appearances with our series in 2013 and 2014 before going on tour with the World of Outlaws. He had several top 5 finishes with our organization with 2 of those being runner-up finishes at I-80 Speedway and Eagle Raceway.
The evening of racing brought 48 360ci sprints to the famous 1/2 mile oval in Knoxville, Iowa. Tonights event was a weekly Knoxville racing event in addition to a co-sanctioned show with our series and the Midwest Power Series. Brooke Tatnell, who won the 360 event last night at Jackson Motorplex, was the only driver eligible for the $3000 “double down” bonus if he won tonight, but what seemed like handling issues with the car, kept him in the B feature and ended a spot short from transferring to the A feature.
The night started with time trials as Ryan Giles became the overall #1 fastest car between both groups. The four heat race winners were Thomas Kennedy, Jon Agan, Ryan Bowers, and Clint Garner. A six lap dash consisted of the top four in 4 passing points between each qualifying group, was won by Tasker Phillips making him the Saldana Racing Products Pole Winner for the 18 lap A main but Lee Grosz finished 2nd. Lee Grosz had to finish in the top two spots of the A main in order to claim a $1500 bonus as he finished 2nd last night at Jackson Motorplex. The two “B” Features transferred the top 2 finishers consisting of 11 laps. Travis Rilat and Cody Ledger transferred to the A feature from B feature #1 and Ayrton Gennetten and Kelby Watt transferred to the A feature from B feature #2.
Tasker Phillips, the Saldana Racing Products pole winner, brought the field to the green flag with Lee Grosz to his outside. Phillips got a great start but Thomas Kennedy jumped from 5th to 2nd by turn 2. Kennedy, on the high side, vaulted past Tasker Philips to take the lead on lap coming to lap #3. Thomas Kennedy extended his lead to a dozen cars by lap 5 but the action was happening for the 6th spot as Terry McCarl and Jon Agan battled for that spot. The yellow came as Ryan Leavitt spun in turn 4 restocking the cars with 12 laps to go.
On the restart, Thomas Kennedy went high in turn one and Tasker Phillips went low. Lee Grosz was able to get by Terry McCarl for the 5th spot on lap 10. Kennedy’s lead extended to 3/4 of a straightaway as Carson McCarl made his was by Tasker Phillips for the 2nd spot but the red came out as Ryan Leavitt ended up on his lid in turn #2 with 7 laps remaining. The top 5 were Thomas Kennedy, Tasker Phillips, Carson McCarl, Ryan Giles, and Lee Grosz.
Thomas Kennedy went high on the restart in turn one but Tasker Phillips had company as Ryan Giles began to battle him for 2nd. Giles was able to get by Phillips with 5 to go. The yellow flew again as Christian Bowman spun in turn 4 with 4 laps to go.
On the restart, Ryan Giles went low in turn 1 and overtook the #1 spot from Kennedy in turn 2. The battle was for the lead and Kennedy continued his high run in all turns and Giles ran the low side. Kennedy got a great run coming to the white flag as he again went high and Giles went low but Giles was able to hold on the last lap for the win and $3000!
