Weedsport, NY – When Darryl Ruggles made it known during the off season that he would be following the 2019 SuperGen Products/Champion Power Equipment CRSA Sprint Car Series, defending series champion Jeff Trombley knew he had a serious challenger for the 2019 title. With Trombley opening the season with a win, it didn’t take Ruggles long to answer with a checkered flag of his own.

Ruggles picked up the win at the Weedsport Speedway Monday evening. The event was the first ever trip for the CRSA to the Jimmy Phelps operated three eights of a mile speed plant and was presented by Midstate Basement Authorities.

The win for Ruggles was far from an easy one as he had to out duel long time CRSA racer Billy VanInwegen in traffic to claim CRSA’s inaugural Weedsport Checkered flag.

Justin Mills and Erik Karlsen led the field to the green with Karlsen taking the early lead. Mills would run second before fading a bit through the field. With most drivers staying low on the track, VanInwegen would take to the top side. It ended up being a win/loss for VanInwegen changing grooves.

The Port Jervis, New York racer rode the top groove from his tenth starting spot into the top five but in doing so showed Ruggles that the high side was the way to go. Ruggles would take the eventual lead before giving it to VanInwegen in traffic. VanInwegen would relinquish it back to Ruggles and then take it back numerous times over the course of the second half of the race.

Ruggles though would get back past VanInwegen very late in the event and hold the lead to Dave Farney’s checkered flag. VanInwegen would settle for second with Alysha Bay third, John Scarborough fourth and Trombley fifth.

A total of 24 drivers entered the event with heat races being won by Karlsen, Trombley and Scarborough. The Prestige Pool & Spa Final Finisher Award went to Matt Priscott, the Midstate Basement Authorities First Car Out Award went to Emily VanInwegen, the Maguire Family of Dealerships Magnificent Move of the Race Award went to Billy VanInwegen, the Powder Tech Powder Coatings Hard Charger Award went to Brett Jaycox (23rd to 13th) and the Magsarus Ignitions Electrifying Move of the Race Award went to Ruggles.
