(Bill W) February 22, 2011 – Brady Bacon got his season with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series off to a start with their inaugural Western Swing to open out the season. Bad luck followed the driver of the Tel-Star Communications #99 a bit, but through four races, he managed three top tens to come back home sixth in the point race. His next action is set for Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5. The ASCS-Gulf South series contests shows at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas and Battleground Speedway in Highlands, Texas for $3,000 to win.
The 2010 ASCS Most Improved driver started things at the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, California on February 9. After maintaining fourth in his heat, he moved from 15th to a tenth place finish in the feature. “The heat race was heavy, and we got the car too tight for the feature,” he says. “I think it fooled a lot of us from the Midwest. Shane (Stewart) and Paul (Silva) weren’t fooled though…but they run out there quite a bit.”
Giant Chevrolet King’s Speedway in Hanford, California was next, and Brady was cruising in the heat until disaster struck. Surges from 12th to third, and 19th to tenth in the B and A mains respectively, salvaged his night. “We were heading for a heat race win, and we had the rear end cover come off and spit the gears out,” he shares. “We had to start way back in the B on a rough track. We were able to salvage a pretty good finish considering everything.”
That set up last weekend’s festivities at the Copper on Dirt Classic at USA Raceway in Tucson, Arizona. After a run from sixth to second in his heat in Friday’s prelim, Brady was set up in row two. “A couple of things happened to us there. The first was the nose wing falling off sideways when a bolt came out. Even after that, we were able to use the bottom to pass a guy for second, and then we were reeling in (Johnny) Herrera for first.”
It looked good for the 2010 ASCS Ronald Laney Hard Charger winner until a self-inflicted incident. “That’s when I hit the infield tire and folded the front end out of turn two,” says Brady. “I was by myself on the bottom, so I didn’t have any dirty air in front of me. I was rolling around well. I think we should have won the race had I not hit the tire. That’s the way it goes sometimes.”
The redraw for Saturday’s finale saw Brady come from outside row two to another second place heat finish. He posted seventh in the feature. “I think I was back in eighth for awhile, and then I was able to pass a couple spots up to sixth,” he says. “Everyone was kind of around the top. Everyone was fast, so it was tough to make up any ground.”
Still, a sixth place finish was tops for the trip, and gave him something to build on. “We were pretty good,” he says. “We just weren’t quite good enough to get up where (winner) Shane (Stewart) was. We’ll take that to give us a little momentum heading into the next ASCS race at the Devil’s Bowl. We were good there last year, so I don’t see why this year will be any different. We’ve had the speed, if we can just get a whole night together with no issues, we should be getting a win soon.”
The team will use this weekend to get prepared for south Texas in two weeks. Last year, Brady finished sixth in Beaumont despite a collapsed top wing panel, and trailed only Brian Brown and the late great Jesse Hockett at Battleground.
