Inside Line Promotions – OSBORN, Mo. (April 30, 2019) – It didn’t take long for Roger Crockett to contend for a win during Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour competition this season.
Crockett closed the season-opening doubleheader last Friday by scoring a runner-up result at U.S. 36 Raceway, where he led a half dozen laps at the bullring.
“I feel like we have speed now, which we basically didn’t have last year,” he said. “The car handled really good all weekend. Our engine program is good. The car responded to changes. We should have run in the top five both nights. If you can average a top five you’ll be in the hunt for wins and for the points deal at the end of the year.”
The action began last Thursday at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb., where Crockett advanced from third to second place in a heat race. That earned a spot into the feature redraw, in which Crockett pulled the No. 6 to start the main event on the outside of the third row.
“We had the speed to run in the top three, but I got a bad restart and we found after the race that a torsion bar wouldn’t even turn so that’s why the car was bouncing so bad,” he said. “It made me not as comfortable and I didn’t drive the car hard enough because it was bouncing so bad. We ran fifth and were getting close to battling with second, third and fourth when a caution came out. We got slowed down and I fell to eighth, but I felt like we got better later in the race. My fastest lap was on Lap 29. A lot of it is getting back in the rhythm of running up front. That’s on me to get racing and get back where I belong as a driver.”
Crockett placed eighth and he continued to show speed on Friday at U.S. 36 Raceway, where he won a heat race after starting on the outside of the front row. That garnered a feature redraw position and this time he drew the No. 2 to start on the outside of the front row.
Crockett ran second early before taking the lead on Lap 5. He led six laps before falling to second, which is the position where he finished.
“The car was super fast on Friday,” he said. “I didn’t do my part in traffic. When I got to traffic I ran the bottom for a few laps. I got slowed down to their speed, which was way off. You just can’t follow those guys. It was a weird deal because it looked like there was so many marbles up high. That’s part of leading the race. You don’t see the guys on your tail are running up there. I ran high in turns three and four and the middle to the bottom of turns one and two. Thomas Kennedy Jr. got by up there, but I think if I had made it through traffic better it would have been harder to get by us.”
Next up, Crockett and the ASCS National Tour are heading east to race this Friday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Saturday at Selinsgrove Speedway in Selinsgrove, Pa.
“I didn’t do well in the main last year at Williams Grove,” he said. “The car was way off. Realistically a top 10 would be a goal. It’s a very tough part of the country. You get a bad draw in a tough heat and it’ll be awful hard to overcome that. If we get a decent draw I feel like we can hold our own.
“We were really fast at Selinsgrove last year. We made a couple of wrong changes for the main event. My expectation is a little higher. If I get my car like it was last year I think we can run in the top five.”
