CG Motorsports- Glenpool, OK (April 24th, 2019) With the National Tour idle this past weekend, Matt Covington and the team decided to join the ASCS Sooner Region in Kansas and Oklahoma. Friday’s event at Humboldt resulted in an early exit from the feature after getting collected in another’s misfortune. However, Saturday’s event at Tri-State turned out to be a great rebound for Covington where he picked up win number 2 of the season aboard his Shark/Triple X chassis mount.
“It ended up being a good weekend for us,” stated Matt. “Humboldt didn’t turn out like planned. We were good in the heat and were able to get from 8th to 5th, but didn’t get enough points to make the redraw. That started us 13th in the feature. I was hoping to drive up through the field but Droud got in trouble on lap 2 and started flipping. I just didn’t have anywhere to go and when I stopped, he came down on top of me, taking out both wings and ending our night.”
Covington drove back over to the home state on Saturday for a chance at redemption at Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, Oklahoma.
After a good heat race resulting in a redraw, Covington used his outside pole starting position to immediately go to work on the high side as the feature went green. Swapping the lead early with Hahn, Matt rode in 2nd the first handful of laps. As the leaders hit lap traffic, Matt was able to continue working the fence to narrow the gap. Covington utilized the momentum on the top to maneuver around the lappers, taking the lead around lap 10. He successfully stayed out front for the remainder of the race and picked up win number 2 of the young season.
“That was a fun track to race and great win for us,” Matt commented. “Me, Mike, and Bill talked before the feature and I made up my mind that I was going to win it or lose it on the top. I got caught up on the bottom during the heat when I should have been on the top. Even though it made me nervous, I didn’t want to make the same mistake in the feature. We just made some adjustments and committed. It was tricky and a couple times I about hit the wall with the right rear, but we made it work. Blake was really good on the bottom and we lost some ground early as I was trying to figure out the best line around the top. I just did my best to be patient, letting the race come to us as we got into lap traffic. This cam that Huggins has in this Shark motor runs great, but it’s also very smooth on the throttle. Luckily it worked for us and we were able get the win. I have to say “Thank you” to Mike for all his hard work, and all of our sponsors and partners that continue to support us and keep us out here. We are going to do our best to carry this momentum into the start of the National Tour season this week.”
