Thompson Aiming to Reach New Level on Heels of Championship Season

Inside Line Promotions – HARRISBURG, Ore. (March 28, 2019) – Tyler Thompson continues to make huge leaps forward in his racing career and his goal is to elevate to a new level in 2019.

The 17-year-old who is a junior in high school took over the leadership role of his winged sprint car team a couple of years ago.

“It’s been really tough because it’s a lot of stress trying to run the race team, keep it organized and the financial part of it organized,” he said. “It makes wins that much more special.”

Thompson has won plenty of races, capturing six Limited Sprints triumphs in 2017 and a career-best seven last season. He also powered to the ISCS Speedweek and overall series championships in 2018.

“Last year was our best year,” he said. “We’ve increased in everything year by year as far as equipment, races, wins.”

Thompson’s sprint car career has taken off on the heels of a highly successful tenure in outlaw karts. He won six championships and more than 75 main events while piloting the race cars for nearly eight years. The progression in winged sprint car racing has followed a similar path with the championships and 13 A Main wins the last two years.

The next step is to race consistently in the 360ci winged sprint car division.

“We’ll be doing it more like 50-50 this year between the 360 and Limited Sprints,” he said. “We’re trying to move up to 360 and travel regularly.”

Thompson has increased the number of 360 sprint car starts during each of his three previous seasons and he posted a career-best runner-up result last summer during the Speedweek race at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Ore.

This year Thompson plans to defend his ISCS title as well as run for points in the 360 sprint car division at his home track of Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove, Ore., where he has finished in the top 10 in both the Limited Sprints and 360 sprint cars championship standings each of the last two years.

“Our main goal is to stay consistent in the 360 class and try to get some top fives and then hopefully get at least one win in the Limited Sprints,” he said.

The season opener is scheduled for this Saturday at Cottage Grove Speedway.
