CG Motorsports- Glenpool, OK (March 20th, 2019) Matt Covington and his CGM team kicked off 2019 strong with a win and a 2nd place finish this past weekend with the USCS at Hattiesburg Motor Speedway and Magnolia Motor Speedway.
At Hattiesburg on Saturday night, Matt was able to advance from 3rd to 4th in the heat, giving him an outside, row 2 starting spot for the feature.
After waiting all winter, Covington charged to the front at the drop of the green to contend for the lead early. Setting the pace through the race, Covington was soon challenged by Tony Stewart as the pair raced through lapped traffic. Matt maintained the lead as the race came to a close and narrowly captured his first feature win of the young 2019 season.
With the first successful event under their belt, Matt and Mike made the trek over to Magnolia Motor Speedway for Sunday’s USCS second race of the weekend.
Matt was able to rally from a deep heat starting spot to finish 3rd, earning him the 7th starting position for the main.
During the feature, Covington was able to maneuver his car towards the front. He secured 2nd place and set his efforts on running down the leader, Mark Smith. Late in the event, Covington finally pulled alongside Smith entering turn three. But, unfortunately, he caught a rut and lost the pass, forcing him back behind with not enough laps to challenge again. Ultimately at the checkers, Covington had to settle for 2nd.
“This year started off better than I could have hoped,” stated Matt. “With the past few rainouts, we just wanted to go somewhere and shake the car down by getting some laps in. The USCS gave us a perfect opportunity to do that by having two nights of back to back racing with promising weather. Mike has worked hard on the cars all winter and it was a huge boost to be able to unload and pick up the win our first night out. That was a fun race, me and Tony battled there most of the feature all the way to the checkers. Sunday night we had another shot at a win but I got to him late and, when I went for the pass, I got a little tight underneath in the ruts and the car hiked up on me. After that, I just ran out of laps to regain the ground. But we will take it and try to build on the momentum to keep running strong throughout the season. We are going to stay up here and run North Alabama next week and maybe hit some races in Tennessee before heading back home to take on the National Tour.”
