Inside Line Promotions – DU QUOIN, Ill. (March 12, 2019) – Derek Hagar isn’t afraid to stand his ground, which is the position he feels he has been put into following a frustrating 4th annual Shamrock Classic last Saturday inside the Southern Illinois Center.

“There’s a time and place to stand your ground,” he said. “We had a couple of incidents with teams thinking they can push us around. They’ll have a rude awakening in the future.”

Hagar opened the USAC P1 Insurance National Midgets event by quickly maneuvering the midget he co-owns with Jonathan Proctor into third place from his fifth starting position in a heat race.

“We got up to third when a guy thought driving through us would help him keep his seat so he spun us in the heat,” he said. “That put us behind for the rest of the night.”

A sixth-place result in a heat race relegated Hagar to the rear of a qualifier. He rallied from 10th to sixth, which lined him up on the outside of the third row in a B Main.

“We got to fifth and I was all over the guy for fourth biding my time,” he said. “Another driver drove through us coming off turn two and spun us out to ruin our chances of getting in the big show. We’re not in that circle so we get treated a little different. It’ll all come back around though.”

Hagar now shifts his focus to his winged sprint car season debut this Saturday at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Miss., with the USCS Series. Hagar has earned at least one podium finish at the track during each of the last six seasons, including wins in 2017, 2014 and 2013.

“We’ve won some races there so it’s been a good track for us,” he said. “You have to get up on the fence to run there. I think it fits our style. Hopefully we’ll have a solid outing and we’ll be able to contend for another win.”
