Rilat Set for Second Straight Chili Bowl Start With BDS Motorsports

Inside Line Promotions – HEATH, Texas (Jan. 14, 2019) – Travis Rilat will be making his second straight appearance at the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals this week.

Rilat is returning to the BDS Motorsports entry during the 33rd edition of the premier midget event, which is held Monday through Saturday inside the River Spirit Expo Center in Tulsa, Okla. Rilat’s preliminary night is Monday.

“It’s always exciting to climb back in a race car, especially since we haven’t raced since last October,” he said. “Bryan Sundby and his team always give me a great car so I’m looking forward to improving on how we did last year.”

Rilat started off strong last year when he made his first Chili Bowl start since 2008. He won a heat race, placed ninth in a qualifier and ended fourth in the B Main to transfer into the preliminary night main event.

He finished 21st before capping the event with a DNF in a D Main during the finale.

“We got off to a great start on our preliminary night, but didn’t get the feature finish we needed to set ourselves up for a great run during the Saturday show,” he said. “I think it’ll go better this year based on what we learned and how much more comfortable I got last year.

“The key to a successful event like the Chili Bowl where there are tons of racers is to consistently move forward whenever you are on the track. You need to always be passing cars and gaining points to put yourself in a great position.”

“It’s kind of funny how I met (Shark owner) Marc Huson when I went up there to Washington for an ASCS National Tour race a few years ago,” Rilat said. “I was wandering around talking on my cell phone and saw a sprint car next door. I walked over, looked around and introduced myself.

“He’s been a great friend. He was instrumental with a support group for me and my family when I was in the hospital up there. He and his wife helped us out in a hard time. As far as his engine skills go, he’s one of the best in the country. There’s only a handful of great engine builders across the country and I consider him one of the best.”
