Inside Line Promotions – PENNGROVE, Calif. (Jan. 9, 2019) – Confidence is at an all-time high for Chase Johnson entering the 33rd annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals next week.
Johnson posted his career-best preliminary night finish of third before he garnered a career-best eighth-place result in the finale during last year’s edition of the premier midget event inside the River Spirit Expo Center in Tulsa, Okla.
“I knew if I got the opportunity in good equipment I felt like I could be a contender, especially on our prelim night,” he said. “I had more confidence going in, which is weird to say because it was the first race with the Morris Motorsports team and not being in a midget for so long.
“Things went our way and it worked out in our favor and we made the best of it. The years before you learned a certain type of style you have to race that event with. It’s different than other events because of how many cars there are and how chaotic it can be. You have to have a different mindset. If you have the mindset where you don’t need to win the race or be a hero, you just need to pass a couple of cars and not go backwards, you’ll be fine. You have to be aggressive, but not too aggressive.”
Johnson’s debut with the Del Morris owned Morris Motorsports yielded great results during the 2018 Chili Bowl and the team competed twice during the regular season with Johnson earning his first career midget triumph.
“I’m more confident than I was last year,” he said. “At the same time it’s hard to expect the same result as last year. You can’t expect a whole bunch. Del has a new car and a new engine so he’s giving me all the tools I need to do what I need to do. Hopefully it works out in our favor again this year.”
Johnson’s preliminary night is scheduled for next Thursday, Jan. 17, before the event concludes on Jan. 19.
“We’re excited about going back to Tulsa with Chase and we’re looking forward to improving our program and getting even better results,” Morris said.
