Andrews Pumped for Fourth Chili Bowl Midget Nationals Following Switch to Toyota

Inside Line Promotions – SANDUSKY, Ohio (Jan. 9, 2019) – The move to Toyota engines by Thomas Motorsports has Chris Andrews excited for his fourth shot at the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals next week during the 33rd edition of the midget event, which is held inside the River Spirit Expo Center in Tulsa, Okla.

In arguably the biggest midget car race in the world – there are more than 350 entries this year – having that confidence is huge for Andrews.

“Tyler (Thomas) said the Toyota has made all the difference in the world in not only the horsepower, but how the cars handle,” Andrews said. “I’m pumped up to get to work. Last year we were on pace for my most successful Chili Bowl. We won our heat on our qualifying night, but got involved in someone else’s crash in the feature which put us in one of the D Mains Saturday. I know we can improve on that this year with a little bit of luck.”

Andrews is part of a three-car team that also features Thomas and Hayden Williams.

“I’m beginning to get a little more comfortable in the midget,” said Andrews, who runs 410ci winged sprint cars around Ohio. “I need to be able to give more feedback to Brian (Thomas) and Tyler to help them get me more comfortable in the midget. I’ve done a lot more iRacing the past couple of weeks and I really think that will help. Coming from winged sprint cars it’s hard to understand how to get the feel of a midget at first. I found myself the first couple of years snapping back to my sprint car instincts and I can’t do that. I need to be able to run the berm and the slick better.”

Andrews will tackle preliminary action next Tuesday before the Chili Bowl finale on Jan. 19.

As for the 2019 season, Andrews has parted ways with the Burmeister Racing sprint car team and is weighing his options.

“I can’t thank Sharon Burmeister, Rollie and all the guys enough for the opportunity,” he said. “We won a lot of races in the 12 years I drove the No. 16 car. I wish them all the best. I have a few things I’m working on. I’m confident I will be in a sprint car this summer.”
