Inside Line Promotions – TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 8, 2019) – Joey Amantea took a step forward during his second trip to the Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout.
Amantea advanced into a B Main during the winged outlaw portion of the micro sprint event at the River Spirit Expo Center last weekend. It was an improvement from his event debut the previous season.
“It was a much better year than last year,” he said. “Our disadvantage is we don’t race on that type of dirt. There are a lot of people out there that have that advantage. However, we learned a lot and it was a good time so we’re looking forward to the Tulsa Shootout next year.”
Amantea competed in both the non-wing outlaw and winged outlaw divisions, which each had more than 250 entries. The action began last Wednesday when Amantea advanced from eighth to seventh place in a non-wing outlaw heat race.
“In practice we were fantastic,” he said. “Then the heat race came and the track was so different. I was really loose and it was only one lane so it was hard to pass. If your heat race doesn’t go well that’s the end of your week.”
Amantea finished sixth in a non-wing outlaw C Main on Thursday.
The winged outlaw portion of the event went much better for Amantea, who maneuvered from third to second place in a heat race on Thursday. That lined him up on the inside of the fourth row in a qualifier on Friday.
“The heat race went well so now we’re in a qualifier and had a chance at making the A Main,” he said. “It was a confidence booster. Unfortunately, we waited around all day to race and had someone chop down on me on the first lap. They just decided to make a hard left. It cut me down so much that I hopped the berm. Someone came in behind me and spun me and I flipped over.”
The DNF in the qualifier relegated Amantea toward the back of a B Main on Saturday. He ended 12th to close the event.
“We were better this year and I was more comfortable,” he said. “I knew more about what to expect and didn’t have the butterflies like I had the previous time. Hopefully next year we can continue to improve and we’ll compete for a Golden Driller.”
