Hagar Makes Tulsa Shootout Non-Wing Outlaw A Main With Chili Bowl on the Horizon

Inside Line Promotions – TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 8, 2019) – Derek Hagar made the most of his first start at the Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout since 2002 last weekend during the 34th edition of the famed micro sprint event.

Hagar, who was driving for Randy and Melanie Boulton in the non-wing outlaw class, locked into the A Main through strong runs in a heat race and qualifier inside the River Spirit Expo Center.

“There were about 275 entries in that class,” he said. “We were good every time we hit the race track. We came from the back of the heat to third. That put us in a good spot for the qualifier and we won it. That put us with enough points to lock into the show.”

Hagar’s run from eighth to third in a heat race on Wednesday followed by a qualifier victory from the pole position on Friday garnered the 13th starting position for Saturday’s A Main. He gained a couple of positions to finish 11th.

“It was great, especially not knowing what you’re getting into because it’s been a long time since I’ve been in a mini sprint,” he said. “You want to try to make things work and we did. Everyone was pleased with how everything worked out. Any time you can go there and make the show out of 275 cars it feels pretty special.”

Hagar will return to the River Spirit Expo Center next week for the 33rd annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals, which is Jan. 14-19. His preliminary night is next Tuesday.

“I feel pretty confident,” he said. “After a strong finish in Du Quoin (last month) that has our confidence built up and this last week we got to run the mini sprint on the same track. Hopefully I can use that as an advantage and go forward next week.”

Hagar is coming off a career-best midget result of third place last month and he posted his career-best Chili Bowl outing in 2018.

“There’s a lot of good cars that are in a D Main or C Main on Saturday,” he said. “Our goal is to get to the A Main and I don’t see why we can’t do it.”
