Lonnie Wheatley, WINCHESTER, Ind. (November 16, 2018) – After adding some additional Western World Championships hardware to the mantel, Brady Bacon finished out a fifth season among the top five in Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car points at last weekend’s Oval Nationals at Perris Auto Speedway.
Double duty the previous weekend at San Tan Valley’s Arizona Speedway netted another Western World Championship title with a Saturday night, November 3, score in the 360-ci USAC Southwest Sprint Car portion of the event.
Attention shifts to the Midget ranks over the next two weekends with Bacon wheeling the FMR No. 76m in the final two rounds of USAC Midget action beginning with the “November Classic” at Bakersfield Speedway on Saturday and then the 78th running of the “Turkey Night Midget Grand Prix” at Ventura Raceway next Thursday.
Following a runner-up finish in the Friday night 360-ci preliminary at Arizona Speedway on November 2, Bacon improved one position on Saturday to add another win to previous Western World scores among not only the 360-ci ranks but USAC 410-ci Sprint Cars, USAC Midgets and winged 360-ci Sprint Cars in previous renditions.
This time around, the “Macho Man” took command nine laps in and paced the final 22 rounds to secure his tenth overall win of the year.
“I was trying to blow enough marbles up to the top on the restarts to keep those guys slowed down behind me,” Bacon explained before moving to the top side of the track in the final laps.
In the 410-ci USAC National Sprint Car portion of the Western World Championships weekend, Bacon worked his way forward from 13th to eighth in the Friday feature before finishing out the weekend 15th in the Saturday main event.
Carrying the Imperial Wagyu Beef colors at last weekend’s Oval Nationals, Bacon was in the mix throughout and battling among the top four in the Saturday night finale only to suffer mechanical problems on the final round.
Bacon opened the three-day set with a strong qualifying effort and a heat race win before posting a ninth-place finish at night’s end. On Friday, Bacon overcame a qualifying effort of 15th to rally from 15th to sixth in the feature event.
Missing the six-car lock-in by the slimmest of margins, Bacon earned the seventh starting position for Saturday’s 40-lap USAC Sprint Car season finale and progressively gained speed as the race went on. Working his way into fourth and with the lead trio within grasp, he lost power as the white flag flew and slipped back to eleventh.
It was still more than enough for the two-time USAC National Sprint Car champion to secure his fifth top-five ranking in series points in the last six years.
With a BC39 win at The Dirt Track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the USAC Midget ranks among his ten wins on the season, Bacon goes into Saturday night’s “November Classic” at Bakersfield Speedway sitting second in series points.
