Inside Line Promotions – LAKE STEVENS, Wash. (Oct. 15, 2018) – Austen Wheatley is scheduled to wrap up his season this weekend during the 25th annual Trophy Cup.
Wheatley will pilot his family car Thursday through Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., during the marquee event.
“I think it all stems off qualifying,” he said. “You have to qualify well, get through your heat and make the main during the preliminary nights. The better you finish is better, but as long as you get those starting points you’ll be fine come Saturday night.
“The track has changed so much. It can take rubber really quick. It used to be a place where you banged the boards. It’s not as much anymore. We’ll see how it shapes up this weekend and hopefully it’s really racy each night.”
Wheatley’s career-best result at the track came in 2012 when he placed eighth during a World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series event.
He has a trio of top fives and six top 10s this season during 18 starts split between 410ci and 360ci winged sprint cars.
“We haven’t struggled in the 360, just a couple of mistakes on my part have cost us,” he said. “We’ve been in contention almost every time out in the 360. I think there’s certainly hope for this weekend.”
