Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Oct. 9, 2018) – Jordon Mallett turned in a pair of strong performances last weekend during the 31st annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway in his home state of Arkansas.

The defending USCS Series champion finished fifth on the first night of the event and followed that up with a sixth-place showing during the finale. Both nights were sanctioned by the Mid-South Region and more than 80 cars were in attendance.

“They had a tremendous car count,” Mallett said. “There were a bunch of high-caliber drivers and very tough competition there. We were excited to see how we would stack up against them. We have never had the best of luck at the Short Track Nationals so we were looking to shake that off our back and show that we were there and ready to play.”

On Friday’s opening night of the Short Track Nationals, Mallett worked his way from third to win the sixth heat race. That put him in the fourth qualifier, in which he moved from fourth to third.

Mallett started seventh in the 27-lap main event and gained a couple of spots to finish fifth, which marked his best-ever run at the Short Track Nationals.

“Early on Friday night I was able to use the bottom of the track a lot,” he said. “The track was really slick. To come home with a top five was a great result, especially with the level of competition that was there. We learned a few things that we put in our notebook for Saturday night and for down the road.”

On the second night at Little Rock, Mallett won the eighth heat race after starting on the outside of the front row. In the fourth qualifier, he advanced from fourth to third place.

Mallett lined up eighth in the 41-lap finale of the Short Track Nationals and wound up crossing the finish line sixth, which was his best-ever Saturday night result at the event.

“The track was a little bit different on Saturday night,” he noted. “I used the top of the race track early in the night, which was opposite of Friday night. The track was a little bit more racy and it was kind of a mixed track, a little slick and a little tacky. We were a little snug in the feature and wish we were a little more freed up early on. Toward the end we were getting a lot better.

“We had 41 laps to get it done and it just came in a little bit too late. I really wanted to run in the top five again, but we were tickled with sixth and felt like we had a really good handle on the car. There were a lot of really good drivers who didn’t make the show. We didn’t have to run a B Main or C Main as we transferred right into the feature both nights. All in all, it was a solid weekend for us.”

Mallett returns to competition with the USCS Series this Friday and Saturday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., as he continues to chase his second consecutive series championship.

“Riverside (International Speedway) definitely holds a special place in my heart,” he said. “Since we travel we don’t get to race at home that much anymore. It was awfully fun to be at Little Rock and close to the shop and we get to do the same thing this weekend at West Memphis. Hopefully we can pull off another win this weekend.”
