Inside Line Promotions – MAGRATH, Alberta, Canada (Sept. 20, 2018) – Cody Masse produced a highly successful 2018 racing season during his first year of competing full time with the ASCS Frontier Region.

Masse finished second in the championship standings and he earned the Rookie of the Year Award as the highest finishing rookie driver.

“I’m really pleased with how our season went,” he said. “We met all our goals that we set at the beginning of the year – to make the show at the Grizzly Nationals, become a top-10 runner who can finish in the top five once in a while and to finish in the top five in points. We made the show both nights at the Grizzly Nationals, had two top fives, five or six top 10s and finished second in points. It was a really successful year.”

Highlights of his banner year include his qualifying for the main event at the Grizzly Nationals and his first top-five finish in a 360ci winged sprint car.

“Qualifying for the main event at our biggest race of the year, the Grizzly Nationals – straight out of the heat race and not through the B Main – was definitely a big moment for us,” he said. “Scoring our first top five in a 360 ever at Belgrade was also special. That was something that we’d been trying to do for a long time. And then we were able to back it up at the end of the year with another top five.”

Masse credited a committed effort by his crew and a relatively incident-free season on the track being among the keys to the team’s success.

“The commitment of my crew was certainly a main factor,” he said. “Not only during the weekends at the track, but also at the shop during the week. Every time I showed up at the track I knew I had a well-prepared race car and the maintenance was taken care of. That’s extremely important because instead of fixing little things at the track, you’re focusing on what the track’s doing and how to get faster each night.

“Another thing I’m really proud of is that we went the entire year without being involved in a caution. We didn’t tear up anything other than a rear bumper the whole season. That’s extremely important, especially when you’re on a tight budget like us.”

Masse also felt that traveling to a variety of tracks improved his team’s performance.

“Racing at six different tracks, including a couple of new ones, helped my versatility as a driver,” he said. “The first few years of my career I just primarily raced in Great Falls. But running six tracks this year was a big reason why we were able to adapt better than we used to.

“We also tried to focus on what we could control and not on things like heat race lineups and who we were racing against.”

Masse also wanted to address the late-season change in the ASCS Frontier Region championship standings by ASCS because of off-track circumstances that moved him from third to second.

“We were third in points on merit prior to the adjustment, which moved us up one position to second,” he said. “I just want to note that third place far exceeded our expectations for the season and we’re very proud of that.”

Masse plans to race again in 2019, but his schedule probably won’t be set until well after the first of the year.

“Our plans will be determined by the schedules once they are released,” he said. “I’d like to race the ASCS Frontier Region again, but we know their schedule will be different next year. We’ll just have to wait and see.”
