Elbridge, NY- October 9, 2010—Steve Kinser has been in contention for wins nearly every single time he has ever taken to the track at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park in New York, dating back to his debut at the sprawling 5/8-mile in 1980. He continued his dominance of “The Fast Track” on Saturday night winning the New Yorker 25 to score the 11th victory of his career at Rolling Wheels before a huge crowd on a chilly fall night. In 27 career starts at Rolling Wheels, the 20-time World of Outlaws champion has finished in the Top-10 each and every time.
Kinser lined up fourth and moved up to third on the opening lap getting by Daryn Pittman. He then worked on Jason Meyers for third and dove under him coming off turn three on the ninth lap. That set up a battle between Kinser and his son Kraig for the top spot. The pair went at it for the next eight laps, with Steve taking the lead from Kraig on the 17th lap on the low side of turns one and two. For Kinser the $10,000 triumph was his ninth win of the season and the 561st of his amazing career.
“We’ve always seemed to run good here and it’s a place that suits my driving style and our race cars,” said Kinser. “We’ve been running good everywhere, and just had a terrible three weeks and ran into too many things. That’s the way it goes. We’ve had a good enough race car to win the points this year and I gave it away.”
The New Yorker 25 went non-stop green-to-checkers without a single caution, putting the leaders in traffic for a majority of the contest. Kinser led the final nine laps of the race aboard the Bass Pro Shops Maxim.
“It doesn’t happen very often, but it does occasionally,” he shared of a race going non-stop. “You put 24 good race cars out there like tonight and you’ll get a race like that.”
The 25-lapper began with Kraig Kinser taking the lead from pole sitter Jason Meyers on the high side of turn two. He quickly opened a lead on Meyers and found himself in lapped traffic just a handful of laps into the race. At that same point Meyers had his hands full with Steve Kinser.
After taking the top spot, Steve Kinser jumped out to a sizeable lead, before some late race lapped traffic allowed Donny Schatz and Meyers to gain some ground on him, before he pulled away over the last couple of laps.
“There was one time when there were about seven or eight cars that Kraig (Kinser) and I were going through and Jason (Meyers) as well,” noted the winner. “Once we got by them we had some open track for the last five or so laps and the car felt great.”
Schatz made a late race charge to come home second in the Armor All/STP J&J. The four-time and defending series champion lined up sixth and was up to fourth just a single lap into the race. He got around both Meyers and Kraig Kinser on the 20th circuit to move into second.
“We were able to get some cars in traffic,” said Schatz. “We were decent, but needed to be a lot better there. We couldn’t get off the top and that is uncharacteristic of this car. We’re working hard to get through it and try to get ourselves some wins.”
Meyers, the current World of Outlaws point leader, ended up third in the GLR Investments KPC to remain on top of the standings as he chases his first series title. He now leads Kinser by 98 points, with Schatz third, 106 back and Joey Saldana fourth, 133 points out of the top spot with three races remaining.
“There are two ways to look at it, but we are disappointed,” shared Meyers. “We had a good car and I was a little too loose early in the race and really started to come on later in the going, but it was too little too late. We have the big picture in mind though. While we are disappointed with tonight that we didn’t win we are thinking about the big picture and it was a good solid night.”
Schatz opened the New Yorker 25 by setting fast time of the 30-cars that took to the blazing fast 5/8-mile. The four-time and defending series champion was not surprised by the main event going non-stop and always looks forward to racing in lapped traffic.
“This is a good place to come and have that scenario,” stated the North Dakota native of the caution-free race. “It’s big and fast and usually gets slowed down quite a bit. Tonight it was pretty quick and this place doesn’t have a bad reputation for yellows or reds.”
Meyers had three spirited battles over the course of the 25-lapper. After Kraig Kinser took the lead, he battled back. Then he and Steve Kinser battled for second, before he and Schatz battle for the runner-up spot.
“I enjoy races like that,” shared Meyers. “I think it shows you who saves their cars until the end. I really enjoy going from green-to-checkers. I think it shows you who really has the whole package.”
Kraig Kinser, who led the first 16 laps of the New Yorker 25, came home fourth in the Quaker State Maxim to score his eighth Top-Five finish of the season.
Daryn Pittman was fifth in the Lealands.com J&J, with Danny Lasoski sixth aboard the Casey’s General Store JEI. Jason Sides came from 17th to finish seventh in the Wetherington Tractor Service Maxim. Jac Haudenschild was eighth in the Owens-Corning Fiberglass XXX, with Paul McMahan ninth piloting the Great Clips Maxim. Craig Dollansky rounded out the Top-10 in the Big Game Treestands Maxim.
The World of Outlaws return to action on Saturday, October 16 at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Indiana for an event that was postponed by rain earlier this season.
ROLLING WHEELS RACEWAY PARK NOTES
•FAST QUALIFIER: Donny Schatz paced the 30 cars that took time with an AMB i.t. timed lap around the semi-banked 5/8-mile oval at 16.037 seconds at 140.301 miles per hour. For his qualifying effort Schatz earned five bonus points. The next four fastest qualifiers also earned bonus points, including: Danny Lasoski (4), Jac Haudenschild (3), Jason Meyers (2) and Lucas Wolfe (1).
