I-80 Speedway Greenwood, Nebraska (August 24, 2018)— A gorgeous clear evening made for exciting racing at I-80 Speedway for the “Speedy” Bill Smith Memorial. This race paid tribute to one of the most influential people in the automotive industry and founder of Speedway Motors in Lincoln, Nebraska. Twenty-one 360ci sprints made their presence at the 4/10 mile speedway south of Omaha, Nebraska.
It was Jake Bubak, all the way from Texas, who picked up the win! It was a decision by the team to take out their 305ci motor that they plan on running tomorrow and pop in the 360ci motor and give tonight’s show a try and it paid off! “Man this 360 motor from Wells runs so good in our Maxim chassis was awesome tonight. It’s cool that Speedway Motors put on this race tonight and a big thanks to them. We came and watched this race last year and about killed my car owner that we doesn’t run this and this year we made sure we had one this time! I just want to thank car owner Ben who makes this all possible! Mike and Mellisa Meyer who let us use their shop and are giving us a place to sleep for the next week, Safety Stepper, Wells Racing Engines, Coyote Candle Company, Simpson, Ultra Shield, Sardeson Racing, and Maxim Chassis. It’s been a great way to end the week!”
John Klabunde, from the Saldana Racing Products pole position, brought the field to the green flag with Tadd Holliman on his outside. Klabunde with the momentum took the field down the back-stretch as Dover postponed himself from 4th to 3rd but the yellow came out after 1 lap as Tadd Holliman slowed down the front-stretch bringing out the yellow.
On the restart, Klabunde kept his lead as Jake Bubak rode the gas tank of Klabunde and Jason Martin challenged Dover for 3rd. The action was spread throughout the top 10 as a great battle for 7th ensued with Stu Snyder and Tyler Drueke. After lap 9, Bubak took the lead from Klabunde. Bubak extended his lead by .803 over Klabunde on lap 10. Dover took 2nd from Klabunde on lap 12 and set his sights on leader, Jake Bubak. Dover closed his lead lap after lap until he caught Bubak but Mason Daniel joined the party making it a 3 way battle. The yellow flew for Ryan Leavitt as he spun between turns 1 & 2. The top 5 sat Jake Bubak, Mason Daniel, Jack Dover, Jason Martin, and John Klabunde.
