Price Wins Second Night of Clay Cup Nationals at Deming Speedway

Inside Line Promotions – DEMING, Wash. (July 24, 2018) – Robbie Price was victorious on the second night of the Clay Cup Nationals at Deming Speedway last weekend when he returned to his roots of racing a 600cc micro sprint.

The native of Cobble Hill, B.C., also finished on the podium in the opener of the three-night event, which boasts one of the highest purses in the country for a micro sprint event.

On the opening night of the event last Thursday, Price was eighth fastest in the second group of time trials and he was victorious in the fifth heat race. Price started third in the preliminary feature and fell back to fourth in the early going. He made it up to second late in the race before crossing the line third.

“The first night we were rolling pretty good,” he said. “The leaders got a little bit away from me and I got back up to them. I was running second on a green-white-checkered restart and tried making a move and it bit me a little bit and I got passed for third.”

Price kicked off the second night as the fastest qualifier in his group and he placed fifth in a heat race. He started on the pole of the Clay Cup Nationals main event and led wire to wire, pacing all 25 laps.

“I knew we had to win with the way the points format was,” he said. “We were fastest in qualifying in our group and had good points there. In the heat race, I spun around after contact on the initial start and had to go to the back.

“Being lined up on the front row of the A Main, I knew I couldn’t afford to go backwards points-wise. I moved around a lot, but ended up ripping the top.”

Price ranked 12th in event points following preliminary action, with points earned each time a driver hit the track. Those points were ultimately used to line up the main events on the final night.

Price, who started Saturday’s A Main on the outside of the sixth row, powered his way to eighth on the opening lap and ran among the top 10 in the early going before jumping a wheel, which bent the front end. Price soldiered on for a few more laps before calling it a night with a 14th-place result.

“After coming back on the track I floated around the back a little,” he explained. “There was a restart with about eight laps to go and I pulled off. We were really good and it was disappointing to end that way. I think we had a chance at being on the podium on Saturday night. We were rolling good early and we were going to be good late, I just made a miscalculation.”

Price will head to Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., this weekend for the Bob’s Burger and Brews Summer Nationals. The event opens on Thursday with a Meet and Greet followed by racing on Friday and Saturday. Price finished third last month at Skagit Speedway during the opener of the famed Dirt Cup.

“I have a lot of laps at Skagit (Speedway) and we’ve always been fast at the Dirt Cup,” he said. “I was hoping I hadn’t lost any of that in the time I hadn’t been there and we were good back in June. Hopefully we can carry that speed into this weekend.”
