PENNGROVE, CA (8-17-10) – At the beginning of the season Penngrove’s Alissa Geving made a decision to move forward in her racing career. After two consecutive championships at her home track of Petaluma Speedway, the 18-year-old third generation open wheeler announced she would race in the highly competitive Golden State Challenge Sprint Car Series and seek a top five finish in the standings.
Twelve tracks and 22 races later, Geving has once again accomplished a goal that she set for herself. The North Bay lady racer that still holds the title as the youngest female sprint car champion in the world tops the candidates for the Golden State Challenge Series Rookie of the Year title with a top four finish in the season ending point standings.
“It’s always rewarding when you meet the goal you set for yourself,” said Geving. “It’s something I have always done. I have a lot of people to thank for helping me accomplish this one. This was not an easy goal to accomplish, we certainly had our challenges along the way.”
Saturday night marked the 22nd and final event in the traveling Golden State Challenge Series. The series ended where it started, at Placerville Speedway’s quarter-mile bullring in the Sierra Foothills. Prior to 2010, Placerville Speedway was one of the most challenging tracks for Geving and her Chicko Motorsports race team. Now, the facility has become a favorite along the King of California campaign trail.
“I really use to stress out when we raced at Placerville, we just didn’t have many laps there and the banking was something I had to adapt to,” said Geving. “Now I love it, I can’t wait to come back in a couple of weeks for the last point race there.”
In the final event of the season, Geving had a strong performance. She drove her Tillett Tool, Pit Stop USA #3x Maxim to the 16th fastest lap of the night with a 10:651 second lap. She finished fourth in her heat race to secure a spot in the 30-lap A-feature that would ultimately crown the series champion and conclude the 2010 point championship.
In the 30-lap feature event, Geving started deep in the field, in the 16th starting position. Using great patience and well executed decisions in heavy traffic, she raced her way towards the top five positions. She was destined for a top five finish in the event until a flat tire delayed her efforts midway through the race. After making the tire change during a caution period, Geving returned to the rear of the line up and began charging her way back through the field, passing an average of one car per lap all the way up to the checkered flag where she finished in the 10th position.
“The car was the best it has ever been at Placerville,” said Geving. “If it hadn’t been for the flat tire I am pretty sure we would have been in the top five tonight. It was set up perfectly and I really want to thank my whole team for that. I really have to thank the team and all my sponsors that supported me through this whole series, I’m glad we chose to run it and we accomplished out goal.”
At the end of the series, Geving becomes the highest finishing female racer in the history of the Golden State Challenge Series. In 2010 she set one fast time award, eight top ten finishes, won a semi-main event feature and captured two heat race wins. She is the top candidate for the Rookie of the Year title in the Golden State Challenge Series which will be announced this coming Sunday at the season end bbq and awards presentation hosted by Dan Simpson Racing in Rio Vista.
This Saturday, Geving will return to 360 sprint car racing at her home track of Petaluma Speedway where she holds one feature win this year. Next Saturday, September 4 she plans on returning to Placerville Speedway to compete in the final Red Hawk Casino Championship event of the season.
