Bryan Hulbert – ALGER, Wash. (June 27, 2018) Wayne Johnson’s weekend at Skagit Speedway and the 47th annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup presented by the Skagit Casino Resort started off strong, but the next two nights were a struggle for the Oklahoma shoe.
Starting off Thursday with a fourth-place finish, Johnson felt confident on the weekend. However, Friday would see the Outlaw Wings No. 2c struggling to move forward with a high draw putting Wayne deep in the first Heat Race on Friday night.
“We were really good Thursday. Won our Heat, won the Qualifier and started on the pole for the feature and I just missed it a little bit and ended up fourth, then Friday the draw just killed us. We were chasing the car the whole rest of the way. The track was just so heavy, we were doing everything we could to get the car freed up and just came up short.”
Working into Saturday’s 40-lap finale through a B-Feature, Johnson struggled to move forward with the track going totally opposite from the night before.
“We just didn’t go back the other way far enough. In the B-Feature, the car was so free, thank God there was a top with enough to lean on because we were in jeopardy, but I finally got the wing far enough back I could get some drive out of it. In the feature, like I said, we just didn’t tighten it up enough.”
Still, in sight of the championship point’s battle, the TwoC Racing Team will set sights on the Fred Brownfield Classic at Grays Harbor Raceway on Friday, June 29 and Saturday, June 30.
“I know that track tried to end my career, but I’ve always enjoyed racing there and we won the first time we went back, so I’m excited to get back this weekend. Seems like we usually have a pretty good package there, and hopefully, she’s about the same this time.”
Racing on Friday, June 29 and Saturday, June 30 both get underway at 7:00 P.M. (PDT).
